Seattle/Pittsburgh trade

MI Donald, Jason, $0.5m (2013)   

Pittsburgh gets:
MI Franklin, Nick, $0.5m (P-n/a)   
MI Gyorko, Jedd, $0.5m (P-n/a)

Some big names in here.  Seattle's used our hitting depth to improve our pitching and this is a big one.  Franklin and Gyorko both have huge potential but Gio is proven to be one of the best in the bigs and has a great contract going forward.  Having Altuve and Hechevvaria at MI still gave us the ability to make this move and improve the team.

Regardless of what questions may surround Gio's name right now, he is on a great contract and as a FA he would be making $10-15m in this league.  The Pirates can replace with him just another SP and take a reduction in points, but we need solutions for the current state of our middle infield as well as the future.  These two young guns will help us do that.

Early reports suggest there is not enough evidence, but it would only affect 50 out of 162 games in his first year.  I even offered to put cash on the table for the first year since Gio could be on the bench.  Regardless, Gonzalez has a very good contract for his performances since he was in Oakland.

Likewise, my side of the deal has its risk with prospects, and I am giving up a high caliber player.

im kind of worried about this deal... gonzalez is no doubt a great pitcher, but giving up two very talented, top MI specs like these guys is too much value for a pitcher in this league imo.. especially a pitcher that's just been linked with ped usage and a possible suspension this season... i'll think about it more before i officially vote though

Even if suspended the deal I think is fair or even favors Seattle.

I dont think Gyorko will amount to anything anyway.

I cant judge a deal based on what MLB might do... If gio is suspended or 50 games.... that means he will still start roughly 20 games. That is probably more than what Franklin will play this season anyway.

I struggled with this 1 but ultimately we have to judge with the information we know now.  Corey I believe you're dead wrong about Gyorko, he he will be the top player in this trade.  course I am biased since I went to college with him.

ultimately gio has been a top 10 performer last year and a top 20 performer the year before at his position and is on cost effective contract.
