Deal Struck Between Tampa & Edmonton

The Oilers & Lightning have agreed to terms on a trade:

Edmonton Sends:
D - Matt Carle (UFA - Due a contract worth 4.8m/season)

Lightning Sends:
2012 Second Round Draft Pick

I wasn't planning on resigning Carle, and I have no draft picks left after some trades I made last season, so this is a no-brainer for me.

Tampa agrees. My defense was terrible last year and I now have cap space. Trying to win now, I'll give up draft picks for 80 point d-men all day. Thanks Sizz.

Edmonton get what he asked for his player ( that he would have lost anyway )

and Tampa get a good D for a 2nd round pick ( with 16 players getting UFA he got enough to pay for carle )

i think this one is a tie  no clear winner .

matt carle makes $3.4m (2011-2012) and lightning have $0.3m in cap space for the remainder of 2011-12...

so i'd say yes, but tampa has no cap space to take on salary. so no unless Gilly and hf6k see it differently with cap space and contract expiration, etc.

2011-12 is in the books right?

if not I say they need to wait until it is and the 2012-13 year starts up.

I don't mind waiting, however, the "Important Dates" post doesn't clarify when cap hits come off the books.

I know in the NHL, you can be over the cap during the offseason, as long as you're cap compliant by the start of the season... I'm sure cheesesteak has plans to let other players go in order to resign Carle, because other wise he would have given me a 2nd round pick for nothing.

I think he should be able to now release any 2011-12 contracts to free agency he doesn't wish to re-sign or sign extensions on players to make them cheaper if that is a plan as well.

i recall from my question regarding when buyout contracts expired it was June 30th rolling to July 1st.

however, as drew said 2011-12 extensions can be signed to reduce cost now. but i believe that 2011-12 contracts are still active.

as for the cap limits offseason, the Rules Committee will have to rule on that.

we'll wait for Gilly and hockeyfreak6000 to make the call.

I shot cheesesteak a PM and told him to announce who he's dropping so we wouldn't even have to worry about the contract problems.

We'll see what happens.
