Ottawa wins the Power Rankings Contest!
« on: April 09, 2019, 03:39:17 PM »
Thanks to shooter for automating these standings with his leet coding skills.

Final Standings
1   Ottawa Senators   72
2   Winnipeg Jets   70
3   Boston Bruins   68
4   New York Islanders   66
5   Philadelphia Flyers   65
6   Vancouver Canucks   64
7   Arizona Coyotes   63
7   Montreal Canadiens   63
9   St. Louis Blues   61
10   Buffalo Sabres   58
10   New York Rangers   58
12   Detroit Red Wings   49
12   Las Vegas Knights   49
14   Chicago Blackhawks   48
14   Colorado Avalanche   48
16   Toronto Maple Leafs   47
17   Pittsburgh Penguins   46
18   Nashville Predators   No Picks
19   Edmonton Oilers   No Picks
20   Washington Capitals   No Picks

I think it's pretty funny that Colorado copied all of Pittsburgh's picks and then Pittsburgh ended up dead last

Congrats janesvilleaces!!

The discount needs to be used on a 2018 extension and the following rules also apply:

***The discount is applied to the normal extendable amount and the length of the contract is based on the normal extendable amount.  For example, if a player would normally extend at $5m for 4 or 5 years - the discounted contract would be $4m for 4 or 5 years.  Note that the final contract does not adhere to the extension contract limits ($4m/year would normally qualify for 3 or 4 years) - the length limits apply to the original amount, not the discounted amount***

***This discount may be applied in addition to the Prospect Discount.  It must be applied to the already discounted amount.  So it's 30% off the original for prospect, then 20% off that amount.  NOT 50% off the original extension price.***

***The discount may only be used on expiring players - it may not be used to extend a player who is currently under contract.***

After reviewing Ottawa's roster situation I realize this discount is worthless for them this year.  I want to make it worth something.

Option 1) Allow the discount to be used in future years
Option 2) Make the discount trade-able

Either way, Janesvilleaces benefits. The trade-able option piques my interest.  Thoughts?

Don't like the idea of letting it be used in future years so put me down for the trade option.

I don't really like either of those options, but I like Option 2) better.

My suggestion would be Option 3) Allow the discount to be used on an off-season FA winning bid.

I came back to say that if it's option 2 then all future winners should be allowed to trade as well....then I read Ian's post and like his idea better.

Put the Coyotes down for option 3

 :iatp:

Hopefully you would have considered this if I had ended up winning :P (although I'm never any good at these things). I don't think I have any expiring contracts this season either.

FA is the best option. Keeps it within this year, rather than the complexity of trading (what's it worth) and to be used in future years (makes the whole thing messy).

I agree that it should be worth something for a team to win the rankings contest. I don't know how I really feel about changing the reward after the fact just to make it more valuable to a team. What are we going to do in the future if a team wins it and they don't have any players to resign and they don't have any cap space for FA? or there aren't any good FA players one year for the team to sign? Seems like it could just cause more issues in the future.

I think making the resign discount tradeable is the easiest way to keep the reward value similar year to year. That way an owner can choose to use it themselves or trade it to someone else who will find value in it. Other options that could be considered is instead of making it a percentage of the resign value to make it a just a $1m discount off of a resign. That way you don't see the year to year fluctuations that we have seen so far (Snuge saved $2.1m off Crosby last year while the previous year I saved $0.8m off Jake Allen).

I know I know.... Another gray area that I didn't foresee and I'm addressing it on the fly.  But I think as a group we've always been good at addressing these kinda things and coming up with solutions that make sense.  That's the beauty of this democratic dictatorship thing we have going here.  I've always opened the floor even when I've made "executive" decisions like this.  And I've changed those decisions on the fly based on great input from you all.

I just think it will be sad to see a year long contest end with lame prize.  It's my fault.  Cally - yes - if it were you I would be having the same conversation.  I think most around here who have been around would vouch for that.

I personally think making it trade-able is the best solution.  It adds value for both Ottawa and the rest of the league, not to mention the intrigue involved with others going after that discount.  I don't really like the idea of it carrying over.  And I really don't like the FA idea.  Especially since it could be used on a massive 1 year deal.

If we do make it trade-able then it can be used on any contract that's already been extended (and currently unprocessed), so that those teams that already posted extensions aren't left out of this.

  • Daddy: Honestly idk why the NBA doesn't do it that way for expanding. Two teams at a time. Expansion draft to amateur draft. I think the idea is fresh and its execution will be pretty dope. ;)

  • jimw: I think the NBA goes one team at a time to give the one team a better talent pool in the expansion draft and also to keep the teams from complaining about losing more players

  • Daddy: I mean they only losing one guy anyway tho. We expose 10 players, protect 5 players, each team, all 30 will lose one player.
  • Daddy: The expansion teams will then both have 15 players heading into the amateur draft with picks #1 & #2.
  • Daddy: Each other team will still have 14 players and one first round pick.
  • Daddy: They need to hire me is what they need to do
  • Daddy: Yeah you lose a guy to the expansion draft. Likely your 6th man. Then the very next day you draft his replacement and keep it moving.
