Dallas got a better return for Suter, a defenceman on similar caliber, but this deal meets my needs as it addresses both my cap constraints and the addition of future depth. Koivu is purely a rental.

With Dallas' pick being middle of the road, I think Slack wins here, but...

I'm not vetoing this trade but it seems like to me that Mikko Koivu is being shown as having no trade value. We had a similar issue before. Teams getting premium returns and a serviceable player in return because they are not going to resign them. This is why players with expiring contracts cannot be traded during the 2nd extension period.

I respect both GMs a lot and don't want to ever tell or suggest how anybody should run their team. I understand why both GMs want to this but is it fair to both and the rest of the league? Not trying to swing the vote but would like to know what others are thinking? 

Hope this makes some sense as I have had a couple of drinks.

Consider the recent trade history Tony. Not long ago I sent Voracek, Binnington, and Dvorak to Dallas for Ryan Suter.

Last season (up until his injury) EJ was the 12th ranked defencman....definitely comparable to, if not better than Suter. So setting those two players aside Martin has picked up Voracek and Binnigton for Koivu and a 1st. It's a fair exchange by any standard but also clear that I have not received the better end of the deal.

Koivu has value....but not nearly as much as Voracek.

Koivu is being shown he has no real trade value because of his current cap hit compared to his average point production. After this season, if he is resigned, it will be a much more realistic number.

 

I don't see anything wrong with the deal.
