Most players currently signed are under 2009/2010 rankings. If we cannot sign our players during the year to 2010/2011 rankings and have it count as an extension that starts the following year in 2012, then we have to sign players at their current salary.
If I am to understand what is being proposed, we cannot resign veterans after the season ends. To sign them during the season they maintain their current salary throughout their next contract.
For example.
Adam Lind - signed at 2009 value - $16.5 mil (2011)
Adam Lind current value #27 CI, #27 OF
Highest salary as per his fantrax value from 2010/2011 - 10.5 mil (#27 OF)
Now if I wanted to re-sign him under the current rule being proposed which is no re-signs on veterans once the season is over, I have to re-sign him to a 16.5 mil contract since that is what he currently makes.
If he stays at his current spot in Fantrax his current monetary value is 10.5 mil, but I cannot sign him to that because of
"You may extend a player's contract in any year, but if it is during the contract, then the new contract must be no less and no shorter than the current remaining contract. "
Now if we do away with veteran re-signs after the season then I have two choices - re-sign him and overpay by 6 mil, or hope I can win him in free agency. Now if anyone noticed in this last off-season, many lesser players were commanding absurd salaries because many teams had a lot of disposable cash. So what is the answer to this problem?
