PROPOSED: MiLR Expanding to 20 Spots in 2013-14
« on: February 04, 2013, 01:10:14 PM »
we should expand MiLR from the current 13 spots to 30 spots starting after the 2013 FNHL Entry Draft to accommodate growing MiLR's.

WHY?
-to provide teams a means of housing draftees and holding onto their team assets longer in a ultra-deep 30-team league.
-30 spots should also be sufficient for the long-run needs of teams in FNHL
-considering NHL minor league systems have 2 affiliates + junior eligible players you can assume 10 MiLR spots for lower level (ie AHL, ECHL, CHL)
-numerous baseball leagues feature 20 spots on this site, some feature 45 spots
-simiplify: 30 MLR + 30 MiLR spots
-most teams will only have 17 MiLR spots filled during the 2013-14... again, this addresses MiLR space for the long-run.  :judge:

Comments, opinions post 'em.

But at the same time i think we go up to 20 spots for 2013-14 , 25 spots for 2014-15 and get to 30 for 2015-16 . Since we don't need 30 spots right away and to avoid mega trades of prospects and having some teams with no prospect at all and some with 30 .

This way if we have new GM in the league for next year they won't get team from a past GM who traded all his prospect for a couple of player for his main roster and then left because his team as no future .

I think this could have a very negative effect on the league.  Look at which teams are currently signing up the young talent or future NHLers.  Its the bottom dwellers like myself because it is currently one of the only avenues left to rebuild a team.  If other issues were fixed I would say great idea.  In fantasy leagues there are 3 ways to rebuild your team. 1) trades 2)Free Agency 3) draft/prospects

Current state of FNHL 1) Trading - There is always a winner and a loser in every trade. History dictates to me that teams in the league for longer periods typically are the winners. Not in every case but the odds are in favor.  2) Free Agency - it is still far cheaper to re-sign extend your players than it is to try and bid them on the open market.  This again hampers the rebuild of many teams since in order to compete they are overpaying for players.  3) Draft -- At least in the current setup , there is still good talent that can be signed without having to pay any additional compensation.  At 30 per team that would leave basically no one.  In most cases a team is in rebuild mode because the previous GM came in , traded away their future and then moved on.

I actually think you should move in the opposite direction which is limit MiLR to 10 ,  reduce draft picks to 3 rounds and start allowing teams to sign and place players to their MiLR instead of forcing them to store them on their pro roster.

Lets face it as a Fantasy hockey pool we are only concerned with the 10% of AHL/CHL/University/ etc players that make the league. By increasing the MiLR all you are doing is creating a hoarding ground for GMS.  You could make it 50spots and GMS will still fill all the spots.  On the flip side,  if you keep it at 10 GMS than have to make the tough decisions of who do i keep.  With 30 teams that is still 300 of the top prospects gone.

Freak good plan with the 20, 25, 30 rollout over 3yrs bud. I've seen some flybynight owners in leagues pull stupid stunts like dealing all their farmhands for some warm bodies at the end of their careers tp take a run at the playoffs. But doesn't the trade committe stop owners from raping their own farm systems?

Snug, what??????
Do like me. rink some javajuice before hitting the keyboard.
You even talking about Franchise or is this about another league? So what if you and I signed a bunch of kiddies to the parent club. It's not like we can stash them in the minors even if there are a Crapload of spots opening up.

javajuice must be a hell of a drug.

I will paraphrase.  More MiLR spots bad idea. Less MiLR spots good idea.

If we had more MiLR spots those young guys you signed would never have been available to be signed, they would be stashed on someone's MiLR.

javajuice is liquid gold and that's no euphemism for golden shower neither. LOL

You got it wrong Snug. More spots is good. Less spots is bad. Love the caveman speak. LOL

Seriously though.
League started 3yrs ago right!?
All you and I did with all those signings of young players is grab players that were drafted 5yrs ago.
With 4 draft picks each yr each team will still be forced to make decisions to cut prospects.

I think what will happen is this league will value farmhands even more and calm down the free agent spending.

It's a good longrange plan for any dynasty league that uses minor leagues.

10 minor league spots is best left for smaller pools.

That is every dynasty fantasy player's dream. More trading!
I joined this league because you can't just build your team off FA signings and wire pickups. That's so easy!

in a perfect world I would agree with you.  i just think you will have a hard time finding 30 dedicated gms that are willing to take the 4-5 years to properly build their team through the draft without going out and trying to jump the gun and overspend in FA.

at 30 milr I could draft for 7 1/2 years before i need to make any decisions on who to keep and who to drop. i am just not seeing the skill in that.

I am one of the ones who dont mind a slow rebuild but your majority just dont have the stomach or patience for it.

I subscribe to the 80/20 rule.   80% of your activity on a league comes from 20% of your GMs.  I would be willing to bet you could apply this to almost every league on Prosfl.
