I can't approve this deal. As of today Mason to my knowledge is the starting goalie. A player for a starting goalie is not a fair trade.
The Columbus Blue Jackets wouldn't get into specifics, but it appears likely that Steve Mason's situation will change in some way or another. Columbus beat writer Aaron Portzline discussed all kinds of possibilities: waivers, a trade, a buyout or even Mason becoming a backup. Here's what GM Scott Howson said: "We need better play from that position. I told Steve in our exit interviews (earlier this month) that we're going to have a different look at that position next year, but that right now, nobody can predict what form that's going to take."
I am taking a chance on him that he gets traded and possibly gets some of his old form back. Last season, him and Elias had around the same amount of points and that was with Mason as a starter, so very high risk for me and low risk for Dallas as they take on a player that will be playing again with Kovalchuk.
