Cardinals and Padres deal
« on: May 29, 2010, 03:30:56 AM »
Padres Receive:
Daniel Bard
Hector Rondon
Martin Perez
4-8
9-19

for

Cardinals Receive:
Adrian Gonzalez

Agon is good, really really good, glove and bat.  He's going to be good and he has been for years.  He has one more year of low salary, but after that it's going to be a big salary.  I love him but he has to go, and this package is a valuable swap.  I get good prospects to jump start the team soon, and a good pick for rebuilding as well.  I accept because this has to happen, not because I want to.  If the Cardinals dont make a serious run at the WS with this guy, which they can, it'd be crazy.  He's gonna make them so much better.  Oh well, has to be done!

So the Cardinals were able to swap Pujols for A.Gonz, Santana, Carter & Gamel.

Pretty impressive haul imo especially considering Pujols expiring contract.

This is a June 1st trade.

Padres Receive:
RP Daniel Bard $2.5m (2012)
SP Hector Rondon $0.5m (P-n/a)
SP Martin Perez $0.5m (P-n/a)
4-8
9-19

for

Cardinals Receive:
CI Adrian Gonzalez $2.5m (2011)

We lose 2 prospects from the Pujols trade to obtain a quality CI and hope he gets traded to an AL team to gain more value.  This trade does not increase our salary cap for this year and gives us a better chance of catching the Brewers in the playoffs.

Approved, Agon is a great player.  Perez and Bard are very good arms.  The overall package seems worthwhile.

I am gonna need sometime for this. (It has nothing to do with me being in the running for Agon). I just don't know if I like the return here. P's are not worth a whole lot in this league not to mention RPs are even less valuable.  I would have liked to see the Padres get atleast one spect bat in return.

I agree with Trade King's assessment.  Seeing a big prospect bat going in this deal would have made more sense.

I see the points made by Mike and Aubrey.  Chris, can we hear a bit more from you on this deal.  The scoring system is weighted in a way that favors offense.  In fact, it is broken down approximately 47% offense, 36% pitching, and 17% fielding.  The position players bring a lot more to the table than do pitchers.

My thought process is total value.  This package offered a lot of total value in return, but I wasn't thinking about how much an offensive postition was weighted.  If I'm getting the short end of the deal I appreciate you guys letting me know.  But three players and two picks was a good deal in my mind.  We're working on reworking it to add a position player if it falls through.

Joe,

I usually break down deals differently. We have a max roster size of 40, so at some point it is a matter of quality over quantity. Sometimes you can find spects of equal value in the FA market and I THINK come this offseason there should be plenty of the same talent level guys avail. Unless ur planning on revamping ur EDR, u only need 10 picks or so at the max. What I am trying to say is, try and get the best guy(s) you can and worry about trying to fill out ur team with FAs and during this offseason. Try to acquire some young good players that you can build your team around and be competitive with AND then try to fill in around them.

So I'm guessing this is going to need refinement for approval?
