Sabathia's new deal averages 24.4M per year.I could be dead wrong on this, but I recall discussing this topic with Colby in the past, and I got the impression that we would not be using the MLB contracts as the basis for contract extensions going forward. Rather, we would let the free agent market in this league determine salaries in the future. There are advantages to not using the real life contracts. For example, I can't imagine anyone re-signing relief pitchers at 12-15M per year since we don't use saves. Also, the new # 1 catcher salary would sky-rocket to 23M per year with Mauer's new contract.
Those were my original thoughts, but I got the impression from Colby that this topic had already been decided. League management was planning to update the extension values based on real life MLB contracts, not the contracts in the league itself. Therefore, I was hoping that someone familiar with the original setup of the league knew of an easy way to accomplish this task.
