1. I agree with this for the most part.  Options should be a percentage more than salary level although I would be up for discussion on what that percentage should be.

2. I agree that we should keep it to 2 or 3 per year at the most

3. I'm Ok with trading options as well.

4. I think that the compensation should be based on value level of the player lost.  I would consider compensating top tier free agents lost with a supplemental draft after Round 1, but these players would be very few and far between.  Other players could be awarded other supplemental picks based on value.  Perhaps tiers based on a post-season draft cheat sheet put out prior to the beginning of our amateur draft for next season?  Just talking out loud but it would seem like a decent starting point.

we'd just have to have to agree on what "set" player rankings we would use. And also something that needs to at least be discussed is, do you hold the draft after free agency or would is said pick be given in the following years draft and if so would they be tradable.

I am going to throw out an off the wall idea for extensions.  In another league I am in, they have what they call a home town discount.  It is used in coordination with free agency to reward the current team that owns the player.  I was thinking that if the discount were used instead of extensions it could yield some benefits:

1) It is easy
2) Provides a benefit to the current owning team by providing a discount (especially to teams who have cultivated the talent in their farm system).
3) Provides market value.
4) It still provides everyone a shot at the player.

Just thought I'd throw it out there.  I'm not opposed to a more standard method of extensions either.

In regards to Free agent compensation, I think the MLB system could be fairly simple for our league:

Three tiers of free agents: A, B, & C
  • Type A yield a loss of draft pick (may also include a compensation pick -- can't remember)
  • Type B yield a compensation pick (not from the team's picks)
  • Type C yield no compensation

I would recommend that it be based on the point values earned by the player according to the league scoring system.  These values are auto calculated by fantrax.

We have a hometown discount in the league constitution too, though it may not be enough to make a significant impact (5%).

I swear I have looked for that before.  I cannot believe I missed it.  Does that apply to our current bidding?  If so, should I be mentioning when I am bidding on a player?

I feel like a lot of people are missing that rule.  I think you're missing with Jeff Francoeur.

Picks would be for following years draft. For example, if an organization loses a qualified free agents in the 2011-2012 offseason, then they would get compensation in the 2012-2013 offseason amateur draft.

Mention it in your bidding and include it in your calculation of the total contract value. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't even remember myself.

A lot of good opinions in this thread, to be sure.  If I may add one:  in The Scouting Department League, the extensions are clear and concise, both for major leaguers as well as minor leaguers.  http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=56184.0

The Draft Pick Compensation is also finite: http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=56186.0

While I'm not suggestion that we duplicate the above, I do think it provides a good model.  One difference in the leagues is the cap, as they are different.

I for one would like to see a decision made on this for this reason: Many teams have players whose contracts expire this year, and without an extension rule we don't know whether we should look to be trading a player or able to extend his contract.  A decision needs to be made and set well before the trade deadline, IMO.

I'm going to set the goal to have this finalized by the end of the month. That would leave 2 months before the trade deadline.

Like other leagues, I will propose a system where contract value correlates with the previous year's fantasy performance. A player in the 90th percentile of his position / group will get the 90th percentile salary offered to free agents in the previous year.

Player must be in the 80th percentile or higher or else his contract can't be extended.

I'll put together the exact wording of the proposed rules and provide a detailed example some time in the next week.

For now, here's a quick and simple example using stats as of today for Ryan Braun:

Ryan Braun is ranked 10th of 177 players that qualify as an outfielder who have played in a game this year. That puts him in the 94th percentile. The 94th percentile salary offered to a free agent in 2011 by an AFB GM for the 2012 season is $14,490,000. The GM can offer him a contact at $14,490,000 per year for one to five years.

Feedback is welcome. If you'd like another example, give me a name and I'll run the numbers (it only takes a minute). If there's any questions, please ask.
