I just want to throw out a name because he has a crazy salary right now.  How about Carlos Lee?  Are we taking into account his salary now or only using how it would rank with the previous years salaries offered?  So could we actually have a MLB player taking a (I dont know if we are allowed to say this or not) paycut?

Based on the proposal as is, a player's current salary has no effect on his future salary. This may or may not changed based on the discussion we have here.

Carlos Lee ranks in the 97th percentile as an OF. He would rank in the 91st percentile as a CI. Based on this proposal. he would be counted as an OF and would get a salary of $20,220,000 per year.

Now that you bring this up, I think we should group players by the position they're eligible for next year instead of the current year's positions. Carlos Lee qualifies as an OF because of games played last year, but he's playing 1B now, which gives him more putouts inconsistent with "real" outfielders.

If we group players be next year's position eligibility, Carlos Lee would be a CI (having only played at 1B this year so far) and get a salary of $11,830,000.

Couple of things: 

1) I don't think a player should get a pay cut through an extension.  I think if a player were offered an extension with a paycuy in MLB (unless the deal were backloaded), the player would go to free agency. Just doesn't seem very realistic to me.

2) What about players that are injured for the entire season?  Does this mean they would not be eligible?  For example, Joakim Soria. 

3) I'd be interested in seeing a couple of relief pitchers, say Craig Kimbrel and whoever the 80th percentile reliever is. 

4) What limitations are you thinking about placing on this (i.e. # of players eligible, available only players in the last year of contract) and when will this start?

We can certainly make a rule that the player's salary can't be less than the previous year.

I had not thought of injured players. Perhaps we would need to set a minimum # of games played to be eligible for an extension. I'll play around with Excel to see if I can copy and paste the rankings and filter by games played.

Craig Kimbrel is actually in the 93rd percentile when grouped with other RP who have made an appearance. He would make over $13M. Kameron Lee is the 80th percentile of just RP's and would make $6.9M. When using just pitchers as a whole, Johan Santana is the 80th percentile. Looking at these figures now, I would think we should do the rankings with a minimum number of games played. Those who just appear in one or two games really skew these numbers. Your thoughts?

If we can get this squared away this month or perhaps in June, it would start this coming off-season. I would limit it to 1 extension per team per season. It would only be for players in the last year of their contract.

Maybe tying the pay percentile to their position might help?  So, if say, the 93rd percentile for free agent relievers is $5m, then Kimbrel would extend at $5m instead of the $13m for the overall 93rd percentile?  That is if I am understanding correctly. 

On the injured players, making a minimum # of games is probably not necessary with the percentile system.  It seems that would be kind of built in to the percentile system.  I cannot imagine someone making it in to the 80 percentile, who hasn't played a lot.  It might help just to see the bottom guy at each position.

For injuries, I was thinking more along extending a player like Soria, who fell victim to an injury.  It sounds like you want them to go through Free Agency.

I was thinking percentiles by contracts offered by AFB free agent GM's, not all contracts. This is mainly to isolate our league from MLB, because we appear to have a different scale (higher salaries).

I'd like to avoid doing salary percentiles by position if possible, as I don't have eligible positions listed in the spreadsheet. I would also have to update this annually, so it wouldn't be a one time task.

I don't have a good idea on how to handle injured players like Soria. May just have to put him through free agency. I'd listen to any ideas you guys might have though.

Based on current proposal, Cain is in the 97th percentile of all pitchers. That equates to $20,040,000 per year.
