Rangers and Pens Divisional Trade
« on: February 11, 2019, 12:25:36 PM »
C Sean Couturier, $2.2m (2018-2019)
2.2m this year
2m for 2019,2020,2021,2022
X- 2019 3rd Round Draft Pick, New York Rangers, $m this year

for

   Mason McDonald (G)
   Victor Ejdsell (F)
   Max Jones (F)
X- 2019 2nd Round Draft Pick, Pittsburgh, $m this year
Drop D Brad Hunt if approved

I trade some of my future for some cup run.  McDonald is a good goalie prospect on the NHL Flames who don't have a #1, real high on Ejdsell and Jones will be on the NHL Ducks after they purge their last place team.  Courtier fits my win now model, so I paid the asking price.  Can resign after this year with the cash from Cho.

Can future cash can be traded like that? In the second line under trading rules is the following, "***When trading cash the value of the cash must be less than or equal to the value of player contracts that are also being traded.  (added 10/29/15)***".

Since Couturier's contract ends after this year I don't think any future money can be traded since there isn't a contract in the future years. Wouldn't the Rangers need to sign Couturier to a new contract now and then they would be able to include the cash in future years?

I took it to mean the value of Courtier's contract is for 2.2m and the cash value being traded was less than that at 2m.  Nothing about contract length.  My interpretation was based on the rule being put into place to money being traded as a trade chip in and of itself.  I've been wrong before though (all my high school haircuts).

I also don't think money can be traded like that independent of an active contract. I'm waiting for Rob to weigh in before voting.

I also don't think money can be sent in a year that doesn't fall within the term of a contract that's being traded.   I recently was considering a trade that would have involved doing that that but I pulled back because I didn't see in the rules that it's clearly allowed and the following at least implies that it's not allowed:  "***When trading cash the value of the cash must be less than or equal to the value of player contracts that are also being traded.  (added 10/29/15)**"

An alternative *might* be to do a sort of "sign and trade" where the Rangers extend the player now and then trade him.

Just saw that Shooter made the same point/interpretation.  I second his reading of the rules.

I was under the assumption PIT is re-signing Couturier as part of this deal and that’s why the future cash...

But probably can’t as not enough cap this year to make it work. (Unless the new deal can kick in starting in 19-20?)

If that’s not the case, then yeah, I can’t ever recall being able to trade cap space as a “trade chip”

I just don't see why it would be tied to contract length.  It was put in purely to stop top teams from trading picks for getting giant lump sum cap relief making the salary cap non-existent.  Otherwise it could just be worded "When trading a player(s) a team can retain only up to 100% of the contract(s)" and eliminate the idea of cash trades all together. Just my two cents.  I'll wait for Rob to rule now.

Yeah the idea is to resign Couturier after this season, but can't as I'd be over the cap since a resign kicks in immediately.  Having Cho resign Couturier then trade eats up more of their cap space this year.

That’d make the most sense.... NYR re-signs and trades, lays more this year.

Not like they need the cap this year.

Unless PIT is just trying to gain extra cap beyond this year and in fact won’t re-sign Couturier...

  • Jwalkerjr88: Idk if anyone remembers the 2021 class but it was weak on offense outside or the top 10-15. I dont regret the deal just learned and move on. As long as you have assets, you can mold your build how you want. Picks are usually the most valuable asset because most gms want in on a draft.
