Draft pick trading / 60 day rules
« on: April 11, 2011, 09:32:51 PM »
Can we get them reviewed?

60 day rule: what's the point of this rule? I can trade player A 10 times in a day as long as player A was not signed in the past 60 days, but I can't do so if player A was signed 59 days ago?

Trading draft pick rule: this one is just dumb. Draft picks are currencies just like players. Not allowing trading of picks closes another door for teams trying to contend or rebuild. If I am the Mets or the Angels, I'd trade away as many pieces as I can for picks in the upcoming draft. Most people dislike the fact that MLB forbids trading of picks. We should emulate everything that's good about the MLB, not retarded rules such as this one.

Im 50/50 with you on this Howe. The 60day window I like. Now if we think it should be shorter thats one thing, but we need this rule. It prevents owners like me who have the Yanks of signing a guy I dont want simply because the Padres want him and send me an offer saying hey, ill send you these 3 for michael young if you sign him......That would not be good for the league. So that rule I agree with.

Draft Picks are a different story. I think it would help smaller clubs out tremendously. Prime example is the Mets. Green did a good job bringing in draft picks. If i remember right that franchise had 3 first rounders, and drafted 3 very good specs. I understand we cant trade because of trying to make the league as real as possible so I understand why but it would be helpful to be able to trade them.

I don't get it. The 60 day rule makes sense if the bidding window is 5 minutes and teams constantly miss players they want to sign. Teams have 72 hours to decide whether they want to sign a player or not.

If the Yankees jack up the price on players beyond the Padres' budget, the only way the Padres will trade for these players is if the Yankees throw in $ and talent.

I like the 60 day rule as is, but completely agree with trading draft picks being allowed.

The other side of this is that MLB teams don't sign players and turn around and trade them - players wouldn't sign with a team they thought might immediately trade them, they sign somewhere they want to play at least the remainder of the season if not long-term.

So, why is it OK to trade a player multiples time during the year? And, why is it OK to sign/drop prospects without penalties? We got to draw the line on realism somewhere...

Good point - we always have to add the ability to turn a franchise around quickly with that of having fun and being realistic.

Which is why trading picks might be a good idea. The 60 day rule is a good idea.

How is trading Chone Figgins multiple times during a year (to the same team too!) realistic but signing and trading players within the first 60 day not realistic?

I am glad to see many feel the same on the trading draft picks issue though.

I agree that it's not realistic.  The fact that we have so much turnover via trade is really not realistic at all - look around the league and see how many teams you can find that even somewhat resemble their MLB counterparts, it's not even been two full seasons yet but I don't expect there to be many (Braun is the only holdover from my team).  Personally, I think the 60-day rule is good and I would go the other direction from what you're saying and try to reduce turnover somehow (maybe give incentives to keep players longer-term like a re-sign discount for a player held 3+ years), being more consistent with our realism rather than drop the idea completely.  That's me and I'd probably be outnumbered since many love the idea of high-turnover, so I probably won't push it.

I was indifferent on the draft pick trading when we made the current rule, and agree with you that while it's realistic, it's not as fun and allowing picks to be traded can help small market teams better re-tool via the draft.  It also helps facilitate trades in general, since small differences in value can be made up for with picks.  That said, now that we've made the change and I've become more accustom to it, I am ok with the current rule and think the strategy of accumulating picks via RFA's is fun since that what Billy Beane does (and we just changed the RFA rules to better facilitate this), but if there's a huge push to get rid of it I won't be that upset.
