This is a HUGE gamble on my part. I trade a goalie that looks to at least be a solid 1B option for a package of three very promising rookies (including a Hobey Baker winner) and a late first round pick. I was hoping to get a goalie in return, but I at least get 5.5M in cap to spend on one in free agency; giving me a total of 12.4 once all my other transactions are accounted for.

I believe Peters and Demko both have the ability to earn number 1 jobs, but I will still be on the lookout for another goalie option.

Sharks confirm this trade. I opened the offer and was happy to see Cam's name but when I saw the list of demands I felt it was like giving up 4 First Round Draft picks in the Top 10. All 3 players we're sending are about to see their NHL careers jump start this yr. For my Sharks who finished a team best 4th Overall and were ready for new soldiers to throw into the lineup after struggling for 3 seasons, giving up all those young NHL-ready players is tough but hopefully Ward is over his injuries of the past 2.5yrs and can get back to at least splitting time with Anton Khudobin.

Overall worth the risk to add a goaltender.

Nice young return, i still think its a gamble. Cam Ward is a proven Goalie & FA is a tough way to fill a void at Goalie

Three seasons ago Cam Ward would not be dealt for three well groomed and as Burke said "NHL ready" prospects plus a 1st Round Draft Pick. However Ward's stock isn't what it once was. Carolina is also saving $5.5 million in cap which is significant. I think this is Even and maybe an Edge to the Hurricanes. Jarnkrok already proved himself last season. Gaudreau and Spooner are going to play in the NHL this season.

I do recognize that goalies are the biggest point producers in the league. That is why I am planning on getting another goalie in free agency with the open cap I acquire in this deal.

I also feel my roster before this trade lacks the depth needed to be competitive in this league. I look at the top 4 teams from last season and their rosters do not have a single weak link in them. My roster currently has players on it that might not see another NHL game. My defense currently has 5 players on it that are not NHL regulars.

With Cam Ward, my team cannot win because I do not have the necessary depth to compete with the top 4 teams from last season. I might make the playoffs with Cam Ward, but there is no way I am going to beat a top 4 team with my current depth. I rather trade Cam Ward for much younger pieces then hold out hope that my team is a real team. Then next season, I can go FA shopping for the necessary D depth if I do not make a trade for it (which is not easy either).

FA might not be a good contingency plan, but at least it is a plan to acquire a goalie.

We like "passionate", we dont like crazy.  I think favo's a man on a mission. Hes got a plan! Ward is worth 3 great specs, 1st rd, and 5.5million other reasons. Its a blockbuster!
