Capitals-Oilers MEGA Deal
«
on:
July 07, 2014, 09:49:23 PM »
sends:
Evgeni Malkin, $4.7m (2016-17)
Alex Ovechkin, $7.9m (2016-17)
sends:
Henrik Sedin, $3.1m (2014-15)
Nick Leddy, $1.8m (2014-15)
Devante Smith-Pelly, $0.7m (2015-16)
Tomas Jurco, $0.2m (2015-16)
Jared Spurgeon, $0.9m (2014-15)
Round 4
Round 4
Round 5
confirms this deal. Well this is probably the hardest deal I have ever done in any fantasy league. Moving two studs really hurts, but I feel that I get some great young depth back. Malkin is on a great contract, but is getting older, and if I'm going to commit to rebuilding, Ovechkin had to go also. Thanks Drew for the deal and working with me!

Confirmed. This has to be the wildest deal I have ever been apart of. Came to with an offer for the two thinking nothing would come of it but this did. I get two great players but give up a lot of youth and 3 picks. DSP is just hitting his stride and could be paired with Perry and Getzlaf next season. Jurco is part of the youth movement in Detroit and Spurgeon has been solid in Minny especially on the powerplay. Leddy is another young defensemen who is just about to hit his prime. Sedin is in there to get the cap more even but even though I take on almost 6m in cap.
Excited to add Malkin and Ovechkin into the mix and should make for an interesting year in Edmonton.
Thanks Ryan for working this out with me and best of luck this upcoming season.

I think Edmonton could of offered a couple of better picks, but I still think the return is very solid for Washington. This deal kicks off the rebuild in Washington by netting 4 very solid potentials, a cap dump in Sedin that could potentially net him something in return at the trade deadline, and picks. Edmonton keeps getting scary, although with all the salary he has in stars, it will be a chore to fill the rest of the roster. I like the deal for both sides.

Just curious if this has a "Cap Dump" aspect in it from WSh side?
Only ask because as I see it Evgeni Malkin, $4.7m (2016-17) is worth at least Henrik Sedin, $3.1m (2014-15) Nick Leddy, $1.8m (2014-15) Devante Smith-Pelly, $0.7m (2015-16). That would leave a deal of Tomas Jurco, $0.2m (2015-16), Jared Spurgeon, $0.9m (2014-15), Round 4, Round 4, Round 5.
That is where I see a little bit off... especially with the amazing amount of youth EDM could have offered in a deal I am on the fence here.
Just hard when it's 2 of the top 10 guys in the league getting traded for parts.

The 4ths and the 5th have a proven value of a single 2nd. Personally I gave up on Leddy and moved him earlier so I am biased there. Henrik will see a rise in production this year but is certainly his twilight. I suppose I view this as the return for Malkin whom I view as a top 5 player.
DSP, Jurco, and Spurgeon for Ovie seems fair to me based on projections if not performance. I think Ovie would warrant something more than promise....a package that included a proven lesser star. I do understand the value of the cap savings on this that at about $6m is more than significant.
The notes above help me sort out how I feel which reminiscent of the real life NHL deal that sent Joe Thorton to the Sharks for a handful of 3rd line players. Nobody knew a deal was available and there would have been a bidding war if they had.
So far I thought Norrya was making brilliant moves to get these stud players locked-up at bargain prices. I know they were possibly available but there wasn't a strong commitment to deal them. In short I think they could have, and should have, netted a larger return. Especially if they were dealt separately. To me this smacks of booze or boredom. It may end up being fair but it's a 180 degree turn from the guy I voted GM of the year. I am on the fence and would like to ask Norrya to re-approve if he wants my vote.

First off, to answer Tyler...this is in no way a cap dump.
I agree that I probably should have gotten a little more, and dealing the players separately would have helped with that big time. Truthfully, waking up this morning I dont love the deal, but I made it. My thoughts were that I wanted to rebuild and this was the best offer I had gotten. In my opinion its just hard to move superstars and I probably should have done a little better.

Myself and Ryan are looking for the votes on this trade so we can either move on accept the trade, re-work if needed, or explore other options.

Sorry guys I am going to say veto. I just don't quite see the value coming back for 2 top 10 players.
I hate vetoeing as you're 2 great managers but I just don't see it as a great deal

It was dallas. I think he missed the playoffs that year. Then used the draft picks on the 2021 class. Every pick was the 32nd pick (dont remembee what the other 1st became)

Idk if anyone remembers the 2021 class but it was weak on offense outside or the top 10-15. I dont regret the deal just learned and move on. As long as you have assets, you can mold your build how you want. Picks are usually the most valuable asset because most gms want in on a draft.
