Ottawa-San Jose Blockbuster Trade
« on: October 30, 2013, 01:15:06 PM »
Ottawa management announces a trade with the San Jose Sharks.

Acquired by :OTT:
C - Ryan Strome (2011: 1/5 - 0 Games)
C - John Gaudreau (2011: 4/104 - 0 Games)
Jordan Nolan, $0.4m (2012-2014)
Dany Heatley, $4.4m (2013-2016)

Traded to :SJ:
C - Mark Scheifele (2011: 1/7 - 7 Games)
Viktor Stalberg, $2.2m (2013-2014)
Danny Cleary, $2.0m (2014-2015)
Paul Martin, $1.0m (2012-2014)
Marc Staal, $1.6m (2013-2016)

Sens make this trade to free cap space for critical contract extensions in the near future.

We take on an expensive underperforming player in Heatley and acquire 3 young and talented forwards as we re-stock our MiLR. Ryan Strome was the key to making this deal happen. We were not going to do this trade without Strome in the package!

We have seen Scheifele play and are not certain his ceiling is as high as we had hoped. The other players we ship to San Jose are veterans but also underperforming and we have better options to start nightly.

Thanks to the Sharks organization. We wish all the former Sens players all the best with their new team.

Sharks agree to this deal!

BTW Sens wanted Ceci and it wasn't going to happen. I misjudged Heater during free agency and he's been an overpaid tree stump on my bench since signing. This deal gets me some players that are only slightly overpaid and gives my team the option at the end of the season to extend or release to FA to free cap and roster space. Stalberg and Staal are candidates to have a killer second half even if they suck now! I think Mark Scheifele will be pretty damn good once they fire Noel in the real Winnipeg! Good working with you DD! :toast:

I require from my teams, proper levels of anger, belligerence and some good ol' fashion piss 'n' vinegar.

I had a tough time getting a good read on this trade. I think it's balanced. On the surface it's a no-brainer for SJ coming away with a good package of players but when you look up their stats it's a mess really. Stalberg is in a new city and sucks. Staal has a new coach and sucks. Martin is playing like he always has borderline passable. Cleary lost precious ice time to Alfie and some other young kids in Motown. Is Heatley any better no. But if :OTT: was looking to clear cap they did. If :SJ: was looking to unload a bad FA signing they did. After that it's about the prospects and I think the Sens get some real good ones here.

I think PPGs analysis was pretty dead on. The deal works both ways, and has the potential to swing big for one team or the other, we'll see how it plays out.

If :OTT: was not a top ranked team (record and Points For) with a full roster of players I would've vetoed this trade since it would've been detrimental to the future of the team. That said I think :SJ: is getting a good package that can suddenly turn things around or remain underperformers as noted by DickieDunn. Heatley is in his contract year + on a good team in Minny so he could also turn it around anytime but he's been stuck in neutral for several yrs now.

this trade appears to get both teams what they need without hurting either.

acceptable trade.
