Backyard NHL: Archives / NHL All-Star Weekend Backyard Updates
« on: January 25, 2019, 03:24:47 PM »
Hey Everyone,

It's NHL All-Star weekend!

Quick things to note, FA is currently closed until Feb 4 at 12pm ET. I have updated projected cap space for next year (this assumes all expiring contracts expire and aren't extended). The last few trades may be adjusted it slightly if you were a team involved, so please be mindful.

Use this information to plan extensions for Backyard first extension period of the season, you may start posting extensions now and if you wish to make any during this period, they must be posted by Feb 4th at 12pm ET.

(note that extensions take effect after the season ends, please refer to the Contracts and Extensions sections in the Rules Handbook)

One last thing, I will be on vacation until Feb 4, and will not be around Profsl or Fantrax until then. If there are any moves that need to be processed on Fantrax, Cho has graciously agreed to help out while I'm gone.

One last last thing, if you didn't see the post yet, we're happy to welcome back Tony to Backyard NHL. The former champ is trying his hand at turning Vegas around.

Franchise NHL: Completed Transactions / Detroit GM away
« on: January 23, 2019, 12:38:37 PM »
Hey everyone,

I'll be on vacation from Jan 26-Feb 4 and won't be checking Profsl very much, if at all. It's getting close to the trade deadline, so I hope that I come back to some trade inquiries.

Be sure to check out Detroit's trade block, it's pretty juicy. If we're in the middle of talks now, hopefully we can reach something by Jan 25, otherwise it'll have to wait until I'm back.

Backyard NHL: Archives / Projected 2019-2020 salary cap
« on: January 22, 2019, 04:27:25 PM »
In December, Bettman predicted that the NHL salary cap for next will be $83m. https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/nhl-projects-83m-salary-cap-2019-20-season/

Given that the project range was $78-82m for this year and we landed right in the middle at $80m (real NHL $79.5m), I'm going to trust that $83m should be fairly accurate. That could change if the players use their escalator to increase the cap further, but that means more escrow.

Per the 2018-2019 Deadlines, FA will close on January 25, at 12am ET. I will work having all projected 2019-2020 projected cap space updates by then.

The first extension period officially begins on January 28th. But since it's All-Star weekend and there are no games Thursday-Sunday, feel free to start posting extensions on Thursday, Jan 24.

Backyard NHL: Archives / Backyard New Year Power Rankings
« on: January 02, 2019, 01:30:56 PM »
It's halfway through the season and the standings are very tight. There could be a lot of movement in the second half and any team is capable of leap-frogging others with a little bit of puck luck and an apple a day to keep the doctor away.

1. New York Rangers :NYR:    (9-3) – These Broadway Blueshirts are scoring like nobody’s business and they lead the league in Fantasy Points Scored. If the season ended today, MacKinnon would be Backyard’s Mario Lemieux Award winner for top scorer. Not to mention that this team has been getting quality goaltending from 3 guys, even with Schneider not being the tender he once was. DeSmith should take a backseat to Murray again, but if not, then this season could be the Rangers’ to lose.

2. St. Louis Blues    :STL-NHL:       (9-3) – Why have the league’s top point getting skater when you could have both #3 and #4 in Kucherov and Pasternak? The reigning Champs are looking to repeat and are in a great position to do so. Both Rask and Griess have been splitting starts and it still hasn’t really slowed this team down. Can their d-corps get any better? Burns, E. Karlsson, Hedman, and Pulock are serious point getters on the backend.

3. Detroit Red Wings   :DET-NHL:   (10-2) – This may be my best year in Backyard and it’s still not good enough to have me at the top of the Power Rankings. This team is built around solid depth with no true superstars. It certainly helps having Freddy Andersen in goal but who knows how long this injury will last, it has the potential to derail Detroit’s season.

4. Toronto Maple Leafs :TOR-NHL:  (9-3) – The team with longest winning streak is Detroit’s rival and neighbor. They are another team with great depth. With Koskinen looking like the new guy in Edmonton, if Bobrovsky can return to form, this team will have 3 great goaltenders when most teams are lucky to have 2 good ones.

5. Washington Capitals :WAS-NHL: (8-4) – Even though their record is nothing to sneeze at, if the Capitals end with an middle of the pack Fantasy Points Against, their record will be stellar. Right now, this team has been scored on the 3rd most in the league. Johnny Hockey and Patty Kane help this team just scored right on back and edge out those wins.

6. Colorado Avalanche :COL-NHL:   (8-4) – If this team had even 1 starting goaltender, it would be that much more scary to face. For now, McDavid, Matthews, and Marner are like 3M wrapping the world in Scotch Tape. They even have a strong supporting cast with Zibanejad, Meier, Stone, and Seth Jones.

7. Chicago Blackhawks :CHI-NHL:   (8-4) – Chicago has been making move after move this year, tinkering for success. Trading for Crosby has worked out well it seems as he leads the team in scoring. The Blackhawks may just sign or trade their way into a deep playoff run.

8. Montreal Canadiens :MON-NHL:   (7-5) – Halak has been a pleasant surprise for Montreal this year. After coming into a certain backup role for Boston, Halak has forced the Bruins into a 1a 1b situation. Eichel, Giroux, and Stamkos are 3 #1 centers that a team dreams of having. We all may come to regret letting the Canadiens pick up Pirri in FA if he sticks in the NHL for the rest of the season.

9. Philadelphia Flyers :PHI-NHL:     (7-5) – Philly is neck and neck with its in-state rival Penguins. King Henrik has shown that he still has gas left in the tank. Fellow Swedish supermodel, Roman Josi, is having yet another great year in Nashville. It will be interesting to see where this team ends up.

10. Calgary Flames :CLG:            (6-6) –
      Pittsburgh Penguins :PIT-NHL:   (6-6) –
      Boston Bruins :BOS-NHL:             (6-6) –
      Edmonton Oilers :EDM:        (6-6) –
      Buffalo Sabres :BUF-NHL:            (6-6) –
Any of these teams could make a move and rise in the standings. Very few teams can be considered out of the race at our halfway point.

  • Brent: And that's why I haven't traded Carr yet.  Someone doesn't have a QB or thinks they'll get one in FA/draft and might be left wanting.
  • Daddy: @Alpha if a team in MLB LIVE has two starting 1Bs then there is also a team without one.
  • ldsjayhawk: @jwalker I make like 2-3 trades a year for each of my baseball teams, maybe.  I'll tell you part of the reason I don't trade.  Every trade discussion starts out with the other team wanting my top prospect regardless of what I am trading for.  I am not trading Jackson Holliday for your backup catcher who is going to play 20 games this year.

  • Alpha5: Nah cause position eligibility. 1B/OF, 1B,3B etc

  • Daddy: CB/S >> DE/LB >> Taysom Hill QB/TE

  • Daddy: Football is just harder. You can build a team and 3 years later its irrelevant due to injury, retirement, roster turnover.
  • Alpha5: @ldsjayhawk I get the frustration but you're gonna have to get over that man haha
    Today at 12:29:52 PM
  • Alpha5: And maybe you should trade Jackson Holiday lolol
    Today at 12:32:00 PM
  • Brent: In an offsite league, I inquired about Mason Miller and the guy asked for Jackson Holliday.

  • dbreer23: Is it like a 4 team redraft league?
  • dbreer23: Cris, there is a reason that you are a good owner, bc you can discern a value deal vs. a BS deal. Not all owners are that savvy. They will eventually leave...
  • Brent: Nope, 32-team contract league.
  • ldsjayhawk: I don't have Holiday.  Just used him as an example since he was the #1 prospect
    Today at 12:56:05 PM
  • ldsjayhawk: @Alpha I do make trades.  I am just not giving up the entire farm to land a guy I can get out of the FA pool
    Today at 12:59:21 PM
  • ldsjayhawk: Trading should be a win-win situation for both teams.
  • dbreer23: Agreed. I think the Devers deal in FGM is a good example of that. Devers gives SD some now (and future) pop, giving up substantial pieces to get him (Mayo, Keith, and one other).
  • Brent: I had Holliday in FGM before I stepped away.
  • Brent: I am glad I cut back on leagues, I was spread too thin.
  • Jwalkerjr88: @idsjayhawk i understand that. To be clear, i wasnt judging anyone. I just know in NFL Live, you cant just draft 1-7 rds every year and sign a few FAs and be the champion. It wont happen
    Today at 01:52:08 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: Trading isnt easy. But neither is winning
    Today at 01:52:22 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: If you made a list of the most aggressive gms to have stepped foot in nfl live, you will notice the champions will be among them
    Today at 01:53:06 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: You arent gonna win every trade and you HAVE to have a plan. Ive made some horrible trades. I have every year
    Today at 01:53:50 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: Carolina has kyren williams right now cause i traded him for a 2nd and a 4th. Id rather have kyren today lol
    Today at 01:54:28 PM
  • Brent: Agreed.  I have Amon Ra St. Brown and Aiyuk because I traded JJ.  I couldn't have acquired a player like ASB where I was picking in the 1st so I down tiered at WR to make a trio of Chase, ASB and Aiyuk instead of JJ, Chase and fill in the blank.
  • ldsjayhawk: That is probably even more true in baseball since your drafts don't payoff for 5 years or so.  And I will admit my conservatism may be the reason I only have one championship here at ProFSL
    Today at 02:10:04 PM
  • BayAreaBallers: jwalkerjr88 is right
  • BayAreaBallers: on that u havat trade a bit here and there
    Today at 02:25:57 PM
  • BayAreaBallers: although my last draft class and fa class kinda lead me to a run so it can happen
    Today at 02:27:21 PM
  • Brent: Yeah, it does help to have a big draft class and available cap.
  • Brent: I'm contemplating doing a complete tear down in NFL Live and rebuild.  Honestly, I probably should have postered for it to be this season.  I still might, but I would legit need to go into the draft with 3-4 top 10 picks/+ many others.
  • Brent: postured
  • Jwalkerjr88: Yea nailing drafts and some key FAs helps too. But if you remember BAB you traded alvin kamara for the rams 1-7 draft picks. So the extra picks helped you nail the 2023 draft the way you did
    Today at 03:13:02 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: Its the combination of all three that is required is what im saying
    Today at 03:13:31 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: And brent a tear down with you assets would look interesting. Personally i just think you need break one big asset down into 3 good ones and move carr and go from there. But you have an A1 nfl mind so im sure you will nail whatever it is you decide
    Today at 03:14:39 PM
  • Jwalkerjr88: *your
  • BayAreaBallers: very good pt yes i did gain lot of capital which propelled me to make more moves from that trade
    Today at 03:34:25 PM
  • Brent: Thank you.  Yes, I agree.  I do need to break one asset down to 3.  I did that with JJ, went from S tier to 2 A tiers.  Now I need to potentially go from an A tier to 3 Bs or something like that.  I've had some inquiries on Carr, but nothing worth moving him.
  • Alpha5: Guarantee I know who he traded Kamara to for 1-7 without even looking
    Today at 05:22:42 PM
  • BayAreaBallers: alpha it was a good trade at the time
    Today at 05:29:49 PM
  • BayAreaBallers: my team was in the Crapter at that pt
    Today at 05:29:58 PM
  • Brent: Who did you draft with the 1st acquired in that trade?
  • Daddy: Whoever it was, he got six more choices on top of that. The "win win" scenario.
  • Daddy: At that time i had no RB1. So i traded an entire draft class to get one.
  • Daddy: SF doubled up his pick haul and went to work, using them in trades & draft return.
  • Daddy: Then beat me in the NFC Title game.
  • Daddy: RB is a hard position to nail down. If someone wants to trade me 1-7 for Kamara. Step right up.
