Proposal to Eliminate the Utility Spot
« on: October 18, 2011, 04:32:44 PM »
I would like to propose something now before free agency that I have thought about for some time now.  I propose that we eliminate the utility spot, because half of major league baseball does not use 9 batters (just the AL).  That means that it is impossible for every team in this league to have 9 everyday players who receive regular playing time in real life.  This proposal should help small and mid-market teams, because they will have one less position to fill on offense.  Thoughts?

The entire MLB does use pinch hitters and half the league does use DH. The UT is a good spot.

I tried this a season or two ago...I think it will add to the talent pool, but I do see the other side of the argument. Plus as we have seen, a lot of UT guys are getting more playing time nowadays.

Too many teams have made investments under the current system.  There would be a ton of trades, investments in FA, etc. that could upset owners if there were a change at this point.

Guys, I ask one more time, let's please stop trying to change things.  This league is great, why do we continue to question it.

I am also not in favour of this. UTIL offers a lot of flexibility for both big and small market teams.

 :iatp:

Aside from a couple small changes to scoring and schedule, there is only so much that we should change in the future.  We made this as realistic as we can within our own rules.  If you want something different then I suggest creating another league with your dream rules.

Ouch!  Somebody sure woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.  Seriously, we don't have a formal owner's meeting, so I hardly thought that the suggestion to drop the Utility spot was out of line.  Everything else like the IP limit and pitching scoring was already on the table so I wanted to put this out there as well.

Roy, that wasn't meant to be negative in any way... just trying to echo Rob's point.  I do think if some of us have some dream rules then we or they should get together here at ProFSL and create a new league around their ideas.  Consistency is king to a long-tenured league's success.
