I think it would be easy to have a break down that you had to pay each year...

Say Johan Santana is making 20 million a year for 5 years. Each year he paid a percentage of it:

First year: 100% so: 20 million
Second year: 75% so: 15 million
Third year: 50% so: 10 million
Fourth year: 50% so: 10 million
Fifth year: 50% so : 10 million

The contract buyout should never be less than the total contract amount.  What you are bringing up is similar to the amount that would be on the books if Santana was dropped.

BEFORE THE TRADE DEADLINE
First year: 90% - $18m
2nd year: 60% - $12m
3rd year: 30% - $6m
4th year: 30% - $6m
5th year: 30% - $6m

AFTER THE TRADE DEADLINE
First year: 75% - $15m
2nd year: 50% - $10m
3rd year: 25% - $5m
4th year: 25% - $5m
5th year: 25% - $5m

For when you drop a player yes.  We are talking about the effects after you drop a player.  The buyout of a contract that is left on the books.

What about waivers instead of dropping a player. Say I want to place Coco Crisp on waivers. He stays on waivers for one week or whatever time determined. If another manager wants to pick him up off of waivers, then I would be off the hook for Coco's contract, and the manager that picked him up also has to pick up his salary and options. If a player is not claimed on waivers, then you must reclaim him, and then decide if you want to cut him for whatever is determined.

How are players handled once they have been released (more specifically, players with non-minimum contracts)?  Are other teams free to bid on them, starting at $0.5M?  Is the minimum bid somehow based on their previous contract?  Must they remain free-agents for a certain period of time before another team can place a bid?

I suggest we're careful with how this rule is handled.  It could happen that a good player is dropped to buy out a bad contract, and the 72-hour window will be even more important to ensure that all teams are aware of the bidding.

They are treated just like every other free agent.  However, under the official rules...

You may not bid on a player that you have released for a period of 30 days.  If you resign a player, their original contract is restored.

Just bumping this thread as I am taking the sticky off of it.  The contract buyout rule will be reviewed by the RC.
