Exchanging Cash
« on: March 16, 2012, 01:11:48 PM »
I think the rule of trading cash needs to be tightened after seeing the Baltimore Orioles receive a ton of cash in a trade and he has yet to use it in FA. There are some damn good FA's available for him to bid on yet he trades a top prospect for just more cap space. I think that trade should be void as he seems to have no clue what he's doing. The rule needs to be tightened NOW as opposed to after the season before more trades happen like this where owners have no idea the value of cash. I have seen this in other leagues before I came to this site and it did not end well.

I threw in my opinion in the Baltimore/Toronto Trade post but I will reiterate it here.  I agree that we need to have tighter rules regarding the transfer of cash.  While I wouldn't mind if the previous deals were grandfathered in, if the trend continued it could be tremendously detrimental to the long-term viability of the league.

Any suggestions?

What about limiting the amount you're trading away to the remaining contract value of the players being traded. In essence, you can only get enough money to pay for the salaries of the players you're getting.

In my league I run here, I do not allow any owner to trade or exchange more than 6M of their cap period. I allow them to use 1 season in advance as well to make things a bit more interesting, but I cap it at 6M. I will keep track of this very closely in case someone tried to go over their limit.

I agree that there should be some kind of regulation in regards to cash exchange...

This is Baltimore.  I am opposed to any regulation regarding the exchange of cash. I plan on spending the money, and it makes the league more realistic.  I had  to give up a top minor league prospect to get the cash, and I do know what I am doing.  If any other teams want to trade cash for a player, I have no problem with that.

I too like the idea of being able to trade cash.  I am not sure about getting $25M for a player but I would like to be able to get up to $10-$15M in a trade.  This can be used to sweeten a deal that otherwise another GM may not make.  They could in turn use this to their advantage in other areas. As I said before, I would like to keep being able to trade cash.

There are already regulations on trading cash (cash traded away can't exceed remaining contract value of players traded away). However, there is no limit for trading cash in the current season, or the following season (if we're in the offseason). Yes, it can potentially be detrimental to the league, though it wouldn't have an effect after a year.

I'd like some more input from others.
