Blues/Oilers Trade
« on: May 12, 2018, 11:28:13 AM »
:STL-NHL:
X-C Robby Fabbri, Discount Eligible, $0m this year
D Mark Giordano, $4.6m (2018-2019)
X- 2018 3rd Round Draft Pick, Tampa Bay, $m this year
X- 2019 2nd Round Draft Pick, New York, $m this year

For

:EDM:
X-C Leon Draisaitl, Discount Eligible, $0m this year
X-LW Justin Abdelkader, Flexed, $7.4m (2019-20), $3.7m this year
$3.7m 2018-2019
$3.7m 2019-2020

Blues do this deal to add Draisaitl to our team. We move a young wing in Fabbri who has shown alot of potential in previous years but was injured this past year along with a top 30 Defensemen and a couple of draft picks. We also take on the contract of Abdelkader with some money paid by Edmonton

Wouldn't Abdelkader technically be a non-part of this trade if he's being paid for?

He'll be 100% free for the duration of his contract, correct?

He'd just take up a minor league roster spot, but be zero cap for St.Lou as EDM is paying the full $3.7m for him, if I understand things correctly.

He's an asset that is being transferred to a different team so not sure how he wouldn't be apart of the trade.

Edmonton currently has him flexed on his roster but I intend to bring him up to my NHL roster. At $7.4m he is overpaid but at $3.7m he become a marginal depth piece for me. Edmonton is out the same cap either way so this frees up a minor roster spot for him and is cheaper then dropping him.

Well....well. Certainly not the trade I was hoping or looking for..... but no one else was biting...... :o
I took over a team that couldn't afford it's super stars.........something had to give. Im banking on Fabbri regaing his form......... I clear some Cap.......and pick up a couple picks. As far as Abdelkader goes.......... I would rather have the minor roster spot.

Being new to this league....... I am not sure how the TC will react. Shooter got the best of me on this one..........but for future reference to all other GM's..........I usually don't make this a habit.........    :taco: :taco: :taco: Thanx for breaking me in shooter........ :toast: :toth: :toth:

I’m just not sure that .... Quite literally paying $3.7m of a teams cap space is worth a minor league roster spot.

Not an actual prospect with upside. Just a roster spot.

Last time I checked in this league, $3.7m of cap space  is worth a whole  lot more than just a minor league roster spot...

Severely leaning towards a veto, among other things because of just that fact alone.
You should be getting compensation rather than a roster spot for that chunk of cap space!

Right now Edmonton has Abdelkader flexed to his minor league roster. So he counts as a minor league roster spot for edmonton. Edmonton owes Abdelkader half of his $7.4m salary ($3.7m) this year and next.

In the trade I would take on Abdelkader contract and Edmonton would pay $3.7m in both years. Edmonton already owes that money if he keeps Abdelkader. There is literally no impact to Edmonton cap space for making the trade. He's not giving me an additional $3.7m in cap space.

Edmonton gains use of that minor league roster spot with no change in his cap situation. It's a better scenario for him then releasing Abdelkader and having to pay 66% of his contract (4.9m) both years to clear the minor roster spot.

I'm not sure that I object to the trade, but the spirit of it is obviously predatory. Much as I feel the Rangers were fleeced in their initial deals this one feels like a lack of understanding of the flex rule has been taken advantage of. Yes Edmonton clears a minor league roster spot, but I believe he was aiming higher.

Welcome to Dynasty Abby!

For

:EDM:
X-C Leon Draisaitl, Discount Eligible, $0m this year
X-LW Justin Abdelkader, Flexed, $7.4m (2019-20), $3.7m this year
$3.7m 2018-2019
$3.7m 2019-2020

I don't see a problem with this.  The Abdelkader part is a wash.  Edmonton gains a minor league roster spot and essentially gives up nothing for it.  The $3.7 is money already being paid.

That part of the deal is negligible for me.  I think you guys are overthinking it.  The deal is this:

Edmonton needs more cost control, and he gets it.  Draisaitl is the better player, but will be a lot more expensive.  In exchange for giving up the better (and less risky) player, Edmonton gains a solid blue liner and 2 draft picks.  Fair deal.

And furthermore if I was in Edmonton's shoes I'd make the same deal for Abdelkader.
