GMs,
Many of you have probably reviewed the Re-Sign Values I posted on the FGM board for player extensions. An update is long overdue and I have been researching to see what would be a fair way to do it. Without going through a step-by-step scenario of how I came about what I did, suffice it to say, I decided to use a supply and demand model based on the existing contracts in FGM.
There are still some contracts that are a bit out of whack on all of our rosters, but as GMs, we have been establishing the value of your players by signing them to the contracts we can afford during free agency. All of us have decisions to make regarding the players who are in the last year of their contract--sign them to an extension and keep them or test the free agent market to see if we can either get them at a reduced price (or if they are a Type A or Type B free agent, get some compensation). Such decisions are also affected by the (P-n/a) percentage re-signs (i.e., Paul Goldschmidt) and the 70% resign value for players who have dropped off in production (i.e., Matt Cain).
So the question then becomes--when do we make the change? I am of the opinion that the best option is to use the existing re-sign values for the current season--each of us has until 9/30/15 to decide whether we are going to sign our impending free agents to contract extensions. Then, when the off-season begins on 10/1/15, the new re-sign values will take effect. From that point on, the updating of our re-sign values will be done each season, and go into effect at the same time each year, so that we follow the supply and demand model upon which they were based.
I know that we have a mixture of veteran and new GMs in this league, and the issue of what's the proper course of action is as mixed as our approaches to our teams. However, these changes are not the result of some flippant overnight decision. These issues have been facing our league for several seasons and, I believe we all want to see the league be successful and move forward. I think these changes will help improve our league and move us in a positive direction.
