Phillies do this deal to get Kipnis.  I like Alfaro but he has to improve behind he plate if he is going to make the bigs.  I take on Phillips salary but I hope he has another good year or two left in him.

Does the Phillies-$12m salary cap for 2014 have to be taken care of before moving to 2015 (and approving trades for 2015)?

I've been negotiating trades based off the 2015 cap.  I believe once the draft is over we go on to the new year.

This won't be popular, but this is what the TC is in place for.


Smith, Cuthbert, Rosario, vogelbach, Alfaro, Phillips

For

Pompey, Giles, Yarborough, Ramsey

Giles is RP=minimal value.  Pompey is good, but weaker than Alfaro in all rankings.  Give up 2 major league MIs, top spec C, and CI to get specs at MI, OF  2, and RP.  I understand getting rid of Phillips and how hard that could potentially be, but I just can't get there.  If released after deadline you will hit cap at 13.5, 9, and 4.5.

This is to me is why the TC is the way it is.  We have watched numerous teams go down this path and the TC got stronger every team to try to avoid.

I am all ears on another method for evaluating trades, but until we get there I have to vote this way.
