Hey, just wondering about extensions....as I read the rules, you use the highest point total from the past two years (and consider all potential positions). Has there been any thought or discussion given to using an average of the past couple of years? I just wonder as it would give a more accurate in the case of injury, etc. Not trying to be the guy who comes late to the party and wants to turn over the tables, just curious...

We haven't had much discussion on that because in all honesty it has never been an issue through the entirety of the league. Usually a good player doesn't have 2 bad back to back seasons and if they do, we may not consider them good anymore. As for injuries, it levels out the rise to re-sign them if you are getting them cheap due to injury, it may just happen again. Anyone else have comments on this?

I like how we do it now for 2 reasons:

1) You cannot get a discount on a Stamkos-like talent where he goes down for a year with injury.  High end talent costs high end dollars, regardless of an injury OR off year.

2) Ease of use.  This has to be a factor.  This would add another variable to the extension equation, which is more work for us and for the league management.  Since I run my own league, I'm particularly sensitive about the management side.  Auditing extensions is one of the most time consuming parts of running a league like this.  Adding this element means more time spent on administration for Drew.

However, on this topic, I would like to again suggest a minimum extension length that depends on the value of the contract.  There's currently very little incentive to signing players longterm.  High value contracts should carry a certain minimum length.  Look at Seguin, for example, I re-signed him for 2 years at $7.5m.  That should have been a minimum 5 year contract length IMO.

Here's how I handle it in my league:

Quote
Contract Limits
Except for any contract inherited in 2011, all contracts must be no longer than five years. Also, for a given salary, all contracts have term limits (max years contract can be per the yearly salary) as provided below.

Salary - Max Years
$5m+ - 5 years (the overall limit)
$3.5 to $4.9m - 4 years
$2 to $3.4m - 3 years
$0 to $1.9m - 2 years

Contract Limits for Extensions
Contract extensions follow the contract maximum lengths as shown above as well as their own minimum standards.

Salary - Min & Max Years
$6.5m+ - 5 years (the overall limit)
$5 to $6.4m - 4 or 5 years
$3.5 to $4.9m - 3 or 4 years
$2 to $3.4m - 2 or 3 years
$0 to $1.9m - 1 or 2 years

Backyard's contract structure has been working nicely years. It is the differences between leagues that makes them special.

Could be something for discussion, we had it this way in the beginning and changed it to how it is now. Maybe somehow this could be worked into RFA style rule? If you sign a player under the max then they are place on an "RFA" where their next contract would have to be the max years?

Just food for thought.

I like that idea.  Or if you don't sign a certain quality player to the max then they can't be extended again and become a UFA at the end of the contract.

  • Daddy: This 2024 NFL Draft class is better than 90% of every draft ive witnessed since 1980. In NFL LIVE if you arent a top ten team, i strongly urge that you invest in 2024 draft.

  • Daddy: Look at the Rams. Look how young my team is. I hardly ever draft. There is more than one way to invest in young talent. The easiest way is the draft but its not the only way.

  • Daddy: Just know, if you miss time at any point of the year, not just the active season. You have missed a lot. You've probably fallen behind your competition. Ten-Fifteen guys in all three of those leagues dont ever miss any opportunities.
  • Daddy: One more thing. The NFL LIVE waiting list is longer than you see on profsl or fantrax. There are people that know people that want in that league. No pressure on anyone but i cant just hold your franchise while you draft and do nothing else.
  • Daddy: i built College football for you guys that do that. Great scoring system, no trades, set your lineup and go getm! NFL moves too fast for that mentality. Apologies.
