Preds/Leafs Deal #2
« on: November 03, 2013, 09:04:36 PM »
:NAS: Gets
Joffery Lupul, $4.1m (2015-16)
Tim Thomas, $3.8m (2013-14)

:TOR-NHL: Gets
Eric Staal, $8.3m (2013-14)
Ville Leino, $0.6m (2014-15)

AND

Carter Hutton, $0.2 (2015-16)
Ryan Ellis, $1.5m (2013-14)

I don't know how much gas Thomas has in the tank but it's pretty clear that his career as a starter is done. His body just can't handle it and I doubt he's back again next season. For me his contract is a cash filler which rounds out the exchange of Staal and Hutton for Lupul. Hutton obviously has good value for the present and at $0.2m on a two-way for the next couple years he's a great piece to have.

What I like more than Lupul's contract is his dual eligibility on wing. That really works for me moving forward.....the downside is his injury history. It's kind of a major flaw especially when held up against Staal who is a bonifide stud and a cheaper resign next season. Leino may have some value but Ellis really sweetens the deal.

Thanks again to :TOR-NHL: for another deal.  :toast:

Leafs accept. I make this trade to acquire a #1 center in Eric Staal. I had a need for this type of player and I was glad to pick him up. I also acquire Carter Hutton. While Tim Thomas is the better goalie (and the much needed #1 goalie) I am set in net with Rinne and Nabokov. Hutton fits in with my plans. I also acquire Ellis who is nice sleeper to have for my team.

SlackJack basically explains about the players I gave up, have to give up value to acquire value.

And....Ville Leino. Otherwise known as the "Leino clause" in every Predators-Leafs deal, there has to be the inclusion of Ville Leino. (Just joking, but SlackJack did just acquire him from my team barely over a week ago, LOL)

Very fair trade, this helps both team needs, might be the easiest trade I have made. Nice dealing with you SlackJack :toast:

I don't understand this deal for :NAS:!  They give up the best player in Staal.  They save some cap, but Staal is in his last year of his contract anyway.  I do like Lupul, but this is a huge price to pay.  Thomas probably does have some value left this year, but in dynasty, Hutton has to be close to his value even if he is a career back up.  And Murphy is a really good d-man spec on top of it.  I'm going to hold off on my vote to see what others say and see if anyone can convince me otherwise.

If it makes a difference, Murphy isn't part of the deal.....Ellis is. Depending on what others think we can probably rework it.

Sorry, meant Ellis.  He has a pretty high ceiling.  Risky, but has a chance to be really good

Agreed. Ellis's ceiling is supposed to be higher than Murphy's but won't be start to be realized until Nashville ships him.....which I'm betting will happen later this year.

:iatp: Lupul is quality especially playing majority with Kessel. Hutton is a good risk take by Toronto for giving up Thomas.
