Draft Picks For Cash Poll

Seeing as there has been some questions regarding the ability to trade cash for draft picks I thought I would throw this poll out there and get a view from the league.

I don't see the issue.  Cash is an asset just like draft picks or players.  In fact having the cap makes it even more valuable because a team can't just spend what it wants like in MLB.  If a team wants to sell a pick or a prospect or even an MLB player to be able to strengthen their team in another way, I just don't see a problem with that.  We should be able to use all of our assets as creatively as we'd like. 

In fact, we're able to trade international money which is capped. This isn't any different than that.  If you're afraid someone might sell their whole draft or something, cap thè amount of money that can be exchanged in trades during a season.  Something like $5 million or $10 million.  I think that's a good way of preventing someone from abusing the concept.

So far the discussion is close.  I would like to round the discussion into should we allow Draft Picks to be traded for Cash but with a cap as the caveat.

If Draft Picks are allowed to be traded for Cash there will be a cap for sure.

Maybe we can discuss this further?

I think the cap is a very reasonable adjustment to prevent abuse.  Maybe the cap should be a percentage of the overall cap in case the overall cap goes up in the future.  4% perhaps which for the current cap would be $5 million per team per season.  I think that kind of cap also prevents a team with a top five pick from selling because its not quite enough value for a pick that high but it allows teams later in the draft who may need the money to sell if they want to keep a player they not be able to keep otherwise.

IMO If you start allowing picks for cash your opening a can of headaches for yourself

Even if you put in this rule, what's stopping me from trading my first round pick and Joe Blow for $12M in 2014.  This isn't technically a "cash for picks" trade.

I am going to add a rule that only cash to cover contracts can be involved in a trade.  No other cash trades can be made except for the following:

1) The trading of International Signing Funds can be traded
2) Cash to cover a contract can be exchanged

The cash to just get draft picks is not allowed.  The trade will be called invalid.

The trading of cash just gets sticky and this is an easy rule to follow.
