We currently have a hard cap set in the rulebook of $69.2m, but if there is enough support, we can choose to adjust our salary cap each year to mirror what the real NHL's cap is set at.
Some years the cap goes up by about 5-6 million, and other years it goes down by just as much. This would help simulate what a real GM goes through each off season, and it could add an interesting dynamic to contract negotiations and free agent signings because there would always be a small uncertainty as to what next year's cap would be.
It could also assist in bringing parity to the league: if I'm a top team and the cap goes down, I might have to dump some decent players to get under, which the struggling teams could use to get better.
