The Phillies agree to send

P Rob Whalen (PC)
P Marcos Diplan (PC)
3B Hunter Dozier (PC)

to the Angels in exchange for

1B Joe Mauer ($5.75M 2018)

The Phillies make this trade to fill a hole at 1B that could not be done (under my budget of years and dollars) in free agency.  I really hate to give up Diplan because of the value of starters in this league.  Dozier was a darling of mine a couple of years ago when I thought he would follow the Gyrko and Rendon path of playing a couple of years at 2nd but that seems unlikely at this point so moving him was easier now.  I signed Whalen as a UDFA and got Dozier for Jesse Biddle so I'm cashing in on the capital appreciation to improve the major league team.

Angels approve.

This trade is a product of the money being thrown around in FA.

I wasn't looking to trade Mauer and was hesitant as it reduces my depth and leaves me vulnerable at 1B. However the phillies came calling and Mauers trade value obviously went up with the crazy prices in FA so I cashed in.

None of the 3 prospects grade as high end to me but i think Whalen and Dozier can contribute as backend rotation and utilityman MLB depth as soon as this year. Diplan may end up as a reliever if he makes it to the bigs but i think he has upside of mid rotation starter if it breaks right for him. Hopefully I can hit on one or two to make it worth it.
