Age discount on resigning players
« on: July 14, 2010, 01:07:43 AM »
I just wanted to test the temperature on this. Since we currently agreed to institute a minimum for contracts on resigning players, wouldn't it be advisable to somehow throw in a clause for older players? Since we don't have a retiring clause as of right now, what about older players 35 and up that have awesome years. Is the team that wants to resign that player forced to sign said player for the minimum large contract? For instance, Vladdy is having a fantastic year, I don't think any team would give him a 4 year deal, but if a team owned him, at the end of the year they would almost be forced to, or lose him to free agency. Same with Konerko, same with Abreau (sp). Just saying once you reach a certain age in MLB the long term deals stop - even if you are a top player, just ask Manny. I think we should institute and age cap on resigning players, or at least give franchises that option, to sign their older players - 35 and up, or something like that to less years than the minimum(I didn't look, so I don't know what it is at the moment). The salary would still be the same. I would like to hear your thoughts.

I agree 100% Option 35 to 38   3 years   from 39 and 40   2 years

It may be best to keep it simple and have teams give these older vets contracts in FA.  People understand the age and the long-term deals won't happen.  Look how much Mags went for last year ($2.5m (2012)!) as a prime example.

While I understand the thought process behind this proposal, I would be leery of complicating extensions even further.  We seem to have many rules on it already.  I would think that in this day and age of less PEDs and greenies, it will be rare that someone 35 or older merits a long-term deal anyway.  I would suggest that we keep age a consideration just like durability and not put a rule in place for it.
