Angels/Rays Trade
« on: June 25, 2023, 11:57:44 AM »
 :trade:

:LAA: receives:
SP Justin Verlander $22,095,000 (2023)
Rays 3rd rd pick, 2023 draft
$20M salary coverage on JV in 2023

:TB: receives:
SP Ryan Cusick (prospect)
SP Elvin Rodriguez (prospect)

By posting, :TB: accepts this deal. Been looking to convert vets into younger pieces, this deal fits the bill.

Good luck on the playoff push, @Sully31 !

Angels approve. This makes me a bit nervous as Cusick was a recent first rounder for me and Rodriguez may be the latest guy the Rays are polishing into a diamond. Plus Verlander hasnt been himself so far. Could blow up on me if Cusick or Rodriguez hits or could be great if Verlander gets in a groove and helps lead me to a championship this year. That?s the game. Thanks to Dan for quick fair negotiations

I disagree with the valuation here. This looks worse than the Hosmer trade from the end of last season that got vetoed and then undone because it was a new owner. As I mentioned then because it was a new owner that didn't believe he could get any value for Hosmer it was overturned. There is no doubt that if you're going to eat 20M there will be takers.

It isn't the All-star break yet and Verlander has spent too much time on the IL to call him cooked, in a month he could easily be back to form and this trade doesn't value him as such.

We're looking at two unimpressive minor leaguers, only one of which is a low top 30 prospect for one of the worst teams in baseball (:OAK:).

Then you throw 20M and a 3rd round pick and that's extreme. Personally I don't think the two of them are enough for Verlander alone let alone the amount of money going back the other way. Even if both sides don't believe he will regain form, fine, but 20M is a huge amount of cap to eat, not to mention the 3rd rounder. In the trade the other day with :TEX: the first round pick went for a top 100 prospect+ two fringe guys, a 3rd rounder should be worth at least a high top 30 team prospect or a couple lower top 30 guys.

I disagree but can respect where you are coming from as it?s a guy who?s been a big name for a long time. Verlander was posted on trade block 10 days ago so not sure this is an issue of not gauging interest. And the injuries aren?t a positive. And even when factoring for that his per game stats are 10+ points less than previous peaks, currently in line with mid to back end rotation guys. Covering salary does matter, maybe I?m not valuing that correctly but i guess as someone with cap room and the fact he?s a rental, it doesn?t carry that much value to me. It seems I value the prospects more than you do. Elvin Rodriguez, despite not having prospect status anymore has great stats at AAA and was getting hype as latest Rays success story and due to be called up ahead of Taj Bradley before he got injured. Not sure id consider him a non prospect. Cusick was my 2021 first rounder and a key part in the Olsen trade a year ago so not sure id call him toast. In any event, we?ll go back to the drawing board but not sure I?ll move forward on the trade if these are the valuations I?m gonna have to overcome.

I don't think this trade has to be blown up, but even on a rental I think that amount of cap has to be accounted for, I would really say that this just needs some extra something. I get that Cusick was a 1st rounder but hes struggled mightily for the last place A's and is ranked something like 19, that doesn't scream valuable piece for the future. And Rodriguez's limited success is a big risk factor.
