St. Louis does this deal because keeping Couturier long term with my other extensions was going to be tough. We are hoping that Marleau sticks it out at least one more year in Toronto and that his walker doesn't slow him down too much. For dealing the better player we acquire some upgrades on draft picks along with a prospect I like in Raddysh.

The Rangers do this deal to get rid of Marleau which he was never in our future plans because of his age and possible salary being mid to high for next year if I kept him.

We also give up 3 higher draft picks but hope Couturier after this past season finally can produce more like that going forward still being a young forward. Couturier is also a better C than some of my other Centers that I am letting go this year or possibly next year. Couturier also adds to the number of high end players I have if I want to possibly compete this year if not starting next season.
