Corey the two trades you have posted are fine examples of salary dumps, but I don't think they are the same as this case since the players involved were of a much different nature. Lackey was absolutely worthless, while Ichiro still holds some value (And we all know hitters are worth more than pitchers). The other trade doesn't fit either since it was done in January and the salary cap space was probably needed for FA. Right now there are no FAs that require that the Yanks clear that much cap room and they are still fighting with the fact that they have more players than they can hold. Which forces them to drop players for every FA signing. It makes more sense for them to clear cap at the end of the season or closer to the trade deadline. It would make even more sense if it was a small market team sending Ichiro packing. Still, I understand how difficult it is to get rid of large contracts, especially with so few teams having any cap room at all. Also, The points regarding the accompanying players are perfectly valid. It can certainly be argued that Harvey could develop into someone better than Turner and that he has a much more favorable contract.I am not sure which way I would vote, it is borderline. I would had probably asked to hear more before deciding, but since it looks like there are two votes against already, it should probably be renegotiated. The problem seems to lay in sending Ichiro for nothing and without even dumping the entire salary. Maybe another prospect or useful player would help. Or negotiating the money differently.
I have to side with Jake on this one. It boils down to Ichiro for a salary dump. I vote no
Understandable. But if you cant salary dump a guy who is turning 38 this year who is 18m and on pace for 2000 points from the OF where 2000 is average then salary dumps are not allowed in this league. In this deal i gain 2000 points and 13.5mil in cap in 2012, 7.5m in 2011 and bring on a 38 yr old. Ive said all I need to say. Ill just keep in mind that salary dumps are not allowed.
