Phillies gamble here that Cargo has something left in the tank. Norris wasn’t longer in our future so we feel taking on the $9m per year more is worth the risk.

Philly does this deal as we believe Mazara has a higher ceiling than Williams. They both put up comparable stats last year but I do believe Mazara will be the better player in the long run. Losing Eickhoff really hurts my rotation but I'm betting on Mazara being worth it.

I mean Jorge Alfaro   Philly gets C Alfaro, Jorge, $0.5m (P-n/a) Nats get C Martin, Russell, $4.5m (2020) OF Mahtook Mikie, $0.5m (P-2019) SP Lively, Ben, $0.5m (P-2020) RP Shaw, Bryan, $0.5m (2018) Philly throws their hat in the ring for Alfaro. I have a lot of cash invested in the C position so I could use a cheaper backup to Lucroy. Martin is older, had some injuries last year, but still is on a good contract and is still a productive C. Mahtook took over the starting job last year and looks to remain a starter this year. Lively should make the Phillies rotation or at worst a long reliever. Shaw is a solid RP. Based on approvals from some other recent trades we feel this is more than a fair deal. Unless Alfaro becomes the second coming of Buster Posey we both get what we want. Nats to confirm.
