Salary Cap Discussion
« on: July 24, 2023, 10:22:40 AM »
Opening up this discussion to change the salary cap to match the real life NBA Salary Cap each season. If this is agreed to, it would go into effect starting with the 2024-25 Season. For example, the cap for this season would change to $136m if we matched the real life NBA.

There are a few things that would change if we changed this:

1. PAying on players will be completely abolished
2. The extension table would change to increase max salary
3. Contract table for FA/Extensions will increase (meaning will need higher salaries to get additional years on contracts)

Please post whether you agree on this change or no.

It will take time to adjust all the contracts to the new salary system (higher max salary), considering that most of the current contracts are multi-years (up to 2027) and will align to the new system only after expiration.
So maybe it makes sense to consider a more gradual adjustment also for the salary cap. If the increase is too big in just one year (from 110mn to 136mn for example), it could create some undesired distorsions. We can maybe start with a up to 10% increase in the cap like in real life NBA.

Moreover, the increase in real life NBA salary cap every year is related to increasing players salaries so the new extension table should probably include a flexible salary system with a higher maximum salary each year.
It seems a bit too complicated, but if someone already uses a variable salary cap in other leagues and it works, we are open to support this proposal

IMO we have to stop making contract and cap changes every year. I get progressing but it changes everything about trades and roster makeup and in our opinion that isn?t something that should happen every year.

I agree to mirroring the NBA salary cap.  We first did this in NFL Countdown.

I also agree to eliminating the ability to pay on contracts.

If making all the changes for the 2024/2025 season is too much then do a phased approach.

2024/2025
- Eliminate paying on contracts
- Increase Salary Cap 50% of difference between CCD and NBA.
- Increase Extension Values by the same percentage the salary cap increase ends up.

2025/2026
- Increase Salary Cap to Mirror NBA Salary Cap
- Increase Extension Values

This is just spitballing, but something along those lines.

Agree to changes, a phased approach like this may be a good solution to deal with current contracts rather than just making wholesale change.

  • Brent: Agreed.  I have Amon Ra St. Brown and Aiyuk because I traded JJ.  I couldn't have acquired a player like ASB where I was picking in the 1st so I down tiered at WR to make a trio of Chase, ASB and Aiyuk instead of JJ, Chase and fill in the blank.
  • ldsjayhawk: That is probably even more true in baseball since your drafts don't payoff for 5 years or so.  And I will admit my conservatism may be the reason I only have one championship here at ProFSL

  • Brent: I'm contemplating doing a complete tear down in NFL Live and rebuild.  Honestly, I probably should have postered for it to be this season.  I still might, but I would legit need to go into the draft with 3-4 top 10 picks/+ many others.

  • Jwalkerjr88: Yea nailing drafts and some key FAs helps too. But if you remember BAB you traded alvin kamara for the rams 1-7 draft picks. So the extra picks helped you nail the 2023 draft the way you did

  • Brent: Thank you.  Yes, I agree.  I do need to break one asset down to 3.  I did that with JJ, went from S tier to 2 A tiers.  Now I need to potentially go from an A tier to 3 Bs or something like that.  I've had some inquiries on Carr, but nothing worth moving him.
