Tampa/Detroit Trade (2-2-2012)
« on: February 02, 2012, 07:45:31 PM »
Detroit and  Tampa have agreed to the following trade:

Detroit sends:
SP Casey Crosby (Erie - AA)
CF Daniel Fields (Lakeland - A)

Tampa sends:
1B/3B/OF Russ Canzler (Durham - AAA)
SP Jacob Thompson (Charlotte - A - 7 day DL)

Thanks to PlayerX3D for working with me on this deal!

(I'll post Detroit's rationale shortly.)

From Detroit's perspective, there were a couple reasons for this deal. I'm in need of a 1B after trading Miggy and Canzler may end up spending some time there (though that appears less likely after the Kotchman signing). I also can't help but get excited about Canzler's numbers in AAA last year, though I realize that he comes with the AAAA risk. He'll be a versatile player (probably eligible at a handful of infield and outfield positions) and could pay off nicely.
I also like what I've been reading about Jake Thompson. He's an interesting prospect that comes in as low as #31 on some Rays prospect lists and as high as #5. Sounds like he could be a solid mid-rotation guy in a couple seasons, if things work out right.
Both Crosby and Fields have higher ceilings than Canzler and Thompson but they also come with more risks.

Tampa agrees to the trade as Detroit described it.  And essentially, he described the reasoning on both sides as well.

Canzler will get significant playing time in Cleveland this year.  Between 1B, 3B, LF, RF, and DH he should top 400 AB's if he provides the type of production I anticipate.  He has a bit of the AAAA look, but that could land him anywhere between Nelson Cruz and Dan Johnson.  Hopefully for my sake it will be more like the latter.  Thompson is a bit of a wild card and could also land anywhere on the spectrum.

Crosby has a 2SP ceiling with electric stuff.  We are hoping his wildness gets under control and he can fulfill his whole potential.  Fields is another high ceiling guy and has been called the top athlete in the Tigers' system.

We like the way the two newcomers will fit into our new youth movement behind our established starters, and we thank the Tigers for a successful trade session.

  • Daddy: Youve seen them? We havent completely structured all that yet. Weve got expansion and other factors that the real Wolves dont face.

  • Daddy: My comment on the real Wolves are if they win a chip then there is no such things as bad contracts. The point of all contracts are to win Championships.

  • Daddy: The expansion draft is LIVE alternating picks until both teams have 15 players like the NBA All Star teams get picked.
