Texas/Minnesota Trade

Minnesota Gives:
Justin Morneau
Luke Hughes

Texas Gives:
Martin Perez
Josh Hamilton

Minnesota accepts.  We are very disappointed to part ways with Justin Morneau and Luke Hughs.

We believe Justin Morneau will rebound in a big way this year.  He has been without concussion symptom for well over a month now and will likely go back to mashing like he used to when he was a perennial MVP candidate.  If he does rebound like I believe he will, Morneau will be a great come at a great discount compared to the other first basemen that will put up similar numbers to his.

Last year, Hughes was a rookie.  He really started to come on at the end of last season and will likely produce in coming years.

Unfortunately, we'll need to give up these guys to net a couple players that help with our current plan.

Martin Perez hasn't produced very well the last few years down in the Minor Leagues (2010 = 5.96ERA; 2011 = 4.33ERA), but we still believe in him.  He is a touted prospect even though his numbers might not show it right now.

Josh Hamilton is a very interesting player, as well.  He regressed quite a bit last year with his batting average dropping down into the .290s and his home run total dropping down to 25.  He's in his 30s now, but we still believe he has plenty of upside.  If he can stay on the field, he should put up consistent power numbers and be a viable asset for us next year.  Unfortunately, Hamilton only has one year left on his contract and there is no way for us to extend it under our current constitution.  This is certainly unfortunate and definitely drops his value.  I won't even discuss his alcohol relapse issues  because I think they speak for themselves.  Nevertheless, if he can get over his problems (injuries and addictions), he can be a very productive player here in Minnesota.

In the end, we are happy to have the opportunity to add an arm to our farm system and get a Major League outfielder that can put together 30 home runes for us in 2012, assuming he can stay healthy and alcohol-free.

Best of luck to both Justin and Luke.  They will both be missed.  Their time here in Minnesota has certainly been appreciated.

I accept for reasons stated above.I hope Morneau will rebound this year and think Hughes is a great addition to an already solid infield
