ATL/CHC Trade
« on: January 16, 2024, 02:32:03 AM »
CHC sends
Ryan Mountcastle 2024-$738,400 2025-ARB, 2026-ARB
2023 draft picks rounds 1-15 minus round 14 as I dont own it.

ATL sends
$5,250,000 int cap
Bailey Obber 2024-700k, 2025-ARB, 2026-ARB
Michael King 2024-2026 arb

**CHC will sign King for 800k if trade is passed

CHC does this as I am working on other moves and this help my weakness last season. Like mountcastle and hurts to move him but this was worth it in my eyes. Now I can rebuild my weak farm via int free agency.

I very much dislike this trade. This is weird, you can't just punt the entire draft. I get it comes with int money back but I don't know. Going to need to think about this one.

This trade is being vetoed.

We have previously vetoed trades where one team trades the majority of their draft picks from one draft. Here an entire draft would be traded and this would not only set a bad precedent for the league health but a team making 0 picks in the draft could seriously damage a team that may leave the league with a team with a barren farm system if the owner were to leave.

To give an idea of value here, last year's top international signee got 5.8M, so roughly the amount being traded here. If C Ethan Salas had been draft eligible he would not doubt been a 1st round draft pick. Most likely a top 5 pick.

Ober and Kings value do not make up for picks 2-15 (-14) when factoring in Mountcastle.

The commissioners office has a responsibility to maintain the health of the league. This trade is not healthy for the league. There is no comment on the decision making of either GM or team. We cannot have teams reading away their entire draft. It has been vetoed before for the same reasons stated here.

So I am just going to say I would have gave 14 picks up. Id say after the first 5 rounds it like a roll of the dice. I was thinking I would rather have 10.5mil int cap which gives me any player I want in int FA. Then I would have at least 4mil to spend on anyone I want. Thats the worst case. I prefer quality over quantity. I would probably grab 7-8 from int with  most of them higher projections than my draft picks. All my picks are late. Then I would grab the 6 50k ones and be at about 15 prospects. Then I am close to having the max prospects anyway. Now that its veto I am going to move on from the deal though but wanted to put in my though process as I spent time going through the int FA prior to the deal

Like I said, this isn't a comment on either of you specifically. This is about whether or not the league can withstand a team trading their entire draft away. This type of trade has been vetoed before, that's the link I included. The balance and health of this league is so delicate right now. It cannot withstand this kind of thing if it goes wrong. If a team trades away an entire draft and then an owner leaves. That leaves that team in a terrible place. Now I'm not saying you're going to leave but once we allow it one time it's hard to stop in the future.

I get you and I just clicked the link to the previous deal.I feel the bad precedent was trading 11 picks for one just to jump one round since they wouldnt be used. It was more like a free picks to  OAK since the Cards were not using which wouldnt be "fair". Nothing was going back the other way in the deal basically. Another example was the 2021 draft that was 5 rounds. The brewers moved all their picks (1-5). I know this isnt the place for a discussion but wanted to point out the veto previous isnt similar to a deal like this where both sides are getting something. Ill be done with this now but just wanted to put what I found as well. This deal is dead and will look forward to the improvement and continued success of the Cubs.

:MIL: did, but those picks were traded in at least 3 different transactions and that draft originally 15 or 20 rounds, I can't remember. We only shorted it to 5 because MLB did, so he still had the rest of his picks.
