16 puts a limit on ELC players or first contract players. I suspect teams with 5 Or more ELC are not a threat to the cup and we shouldn’t fracture their rebuilding. I think Seattle likes this rule but it robs the leagues parity progress and was not capped in the prior expansion. I would think the owners would want a vote to add this but a good parity topic like rollback of cap.

15 does the 20-21 regular season conclude and allow for tags to be removed before expansion takes place? Else two franchise tagged goalies could cause an issue since they cannot both be protected. If it’s open season to remove tags.. likely won’t need this rule.

14 I don’t remember but reasonable to assume all teams will meet this if nhl games count is not a factor.

13 hurts Seattle’s ability to negotiate a bigger deal. St. Louis or Colorado were not compensated in the prior expansion. I think this goes away but I’m open to compensation in arrears. Teams w two good goalies should be sweating and paying a luxury tax. The expansion draft provides the vehicle to tax.

18 is new; I don’t see it playing a role but maybe one team protects the Milr interests by adding a FA goalie to expose? Or games played matters?

Definitely good to have the rules list published. I like that you were proactive to possibly expanded rule set. 13 certainly caught me by surprise and I am interested in understanding the other rules for balance to league and draft value proposition.

Every team (aside from VGK, BUF & ANH) will play by the same rules. Even my Flyers are impacted, so will PR's Panthers.

If you apply the rules across the league or simply take a sample size to apply these expansion rules to, everyone will see that it gives all teams a chance to protect their core. A team simply won't have the luxury of being untouchable.

Ultimately, each team will lose 1 player. All I would say is, protect that one player if he's that critical to your franchise.

#15 is self explanatory. FP's locked until expansion draft completed. So whoever a team Franchise's and benefits from a discount, well you need to protect that player who gave you a hometown discount.

Just for practice and for fun, if Anaheim had to submit a protection list this is what it would look like at this point:

:ANA: Mock Protection List 7 Skaters AND 1 Goalie
1. Tomas Hertl, $5.3m (2019-2022)
2. Brayden Point, $7.4m (2019-2023)
3. Jared McCann, $2.4m (2019-2022)
4. Joshua Morrissey, $2.8m (2019-2022)
5. Josh Manson, $4.5m (2018-2022-FP-6.0 :ANA:). Franchise Player is protected
6. Tom Wilson, $10.0m (2020-2025)
7. Jared McCann, $2.4m (2019-2022)
8. Kevin Lankinen, $4.9m (2020-2023)

3 Defencemen exposed:
1. Anthony Bitetto, $0.6m (2019-2021)
2. Greg Pateryn, $0.7m (2020-2022)
3. Jason Demers, $1.5m (2020-2023)

Maximum 4 Entry Level Contract (ELC) players can be protected:
1. Nico Hischier, $3.0m (2018-2021-ELC)

Maximum 5 expiring contracts (ending in 2021 and no extension)
n/a

Must expose 1 Goalie from the regular roster or expose 3 in MiLR if there is no qualifying regular roster Goalie to be exposed
Anders Nilsson, $5.3m (2020-2023) is exposed

So the competition point of 15 is can Nashville tag both goalies since both cannot be protected

Sounds like “no” ?

I think it's obvious a team with 2 starting G can't protect both as the rule is written.

I’ve got a former champ to catch. If this expansion rule means Nashville cannot franchise both those goalies headed into this next season it’s to Colorado Dallas and Chicago’s advantage.

I certainly don’t want Nashville getting compensation for losing a goalie after I took the loss without return.  Boo that nonsense

I’m also after that rule rewarding winners w draft picks but that’s another thread.... Ant rant concluded

PPG i take it that the 4 ELC contracts that can be protected are part of the 7 skaters and 1 G or 8 skaters and no G. Protection slots.

  • ldsjayhawk: @jwalker I make like 2-3 trades a year for each of my baseball teams, maybe.  I'll tell you part of the reason I don't trade.  Every trade discussion starts out with the other team wanting my top prospect regardless of what I am trading for.  I am not trading Jackson Holliday for your backup catcher who is going to play 20 games this year.

  • dbreer23: Agreed. I think the Devers deal in FGM is a good example of that. Devers gives SD some now (and future) pop, giving up substantial pieces to get him (Mayo, Keith, and one other).
