Discuss Your Best and Worst Trades as a GM
« on: July 26, 2010, 04:24:48 PM »
My trades in 2009 didn't produce the talent (Brandon Wood anybody) this year as expected.  I dropped a few of them, abandoned others via trade, and even traded some for other players that I dropped (Travis Buck).  All in all, I have upgraded my prospects and traded many of them along with draft picks to bring up Billy Butler, Ryan Zimmerman, Brett Gardner, Travis Snider, Johnny Cueto, and Brett Cecil.

Best trade, Renfroe for an 8th round draft pick.  Those picks probably wont make my roster and Renfroe is more of a hit than an 8th rounder for me.

Worst trade - Joey Votto for Grady Sizemore. Best trade - Grady Sizemore for Josh Hamilton. I have had a few other doozies - both good and bad. I feel my team is better than what I started with.

The Sizemore-Hamilton trade was the primary motivator for me to create this thread.

Players Out from trade:
Ryan Zimmerman
Adam Dunn
Christian Guzman
Joel Pinero
Zach Britton
Jamie Moyer
Livan Hernandez
Jose Tabata
Elijah Dukes
Nyjer Morgan
Chase Headley
Marc Rzepcynski
Gaby Sanchez
Melvin Mora
Jesus Flores
Jordan Zimmerman
Ramon Santiago
Brennan Boesch
Jio Mier
Justin Maxwell
Drew Storen
Brandon Lyon

Player In from trade:
Erick Aybar
James Darnell
Ike Davis
Edwin Encarnacion
Chad Jenkins
Paul Maholm
Mike Napoli
Austin Romine
Cliff Pennington
Alex Rios
Alex White
Neftali Feliz
Felix Pie
Sebastian Valle
Kyle Heckathorn
Danny Espinosa
Mark Buerhle

I've given away a lot of talent, and have received probably less in return, judging from my overall in/outs.  I'm pretty happy with my team, however.  I guess if there was one trade I thought turned out bad for me, it would have been the Headley/Sanchez deal to Dan.  Really underestimated how Sanchez would do this year, and got a bit too scared with Logan Morrison in his shadow.

I messed around with Jayson Werth and ended up with Ibanez which didn't work out.  I made several moves with the Phillies, Royals, Pirates, Orioles, Indians, Cubs, and a couple other squads.  Landing Greinke was perhaps my biggest accomplishment.  Trading away the liabilities of Torii Hunter, Mark Buerhle, Jon Lackey, and Chipper Jones may have been a better accomplishment.

Looking back at my recent Cueto trade invokes some yak from my end, but that's only temporary until Freese quits drinking .  Other than that, I shed a lot of contracts and brought in better talent  The acquisition of Swisher was a great one.  I probably should have held on to Hafner instead of dropping him.

My Sizemore/Hamilton deal looks very bad in retrospect, but keep in mind that I most likely would have had to let Hamilton go at the end of the year due to his future $22.5m salary.  Sizemore is signed through 2012 at a modest salary of $4m.

Good trades include Lincy/Hill for Cano/Fister.  I also like the JJ deal with the Fish and getting Liriano at a discount from the Twinkies.

Bad trades are whatever I traded for ARAM.  He is trying prove his value over the 2nd half.

Worst trade Bautista for a 3rd round pick. Best trade would have to be getting rid of Wells' mammooth contract and Hill who has been a major flop. Why? Because it gave me the flexibility to restructure the whole team and bring on faces like Uggla, Phillips and Zobrist. I would also say my worst FA acquisition Casey Kotchman and my best FA acquisition has been Jon Jay, didnĀ“t expect him in the majors for a while, but he has been awesome so far.
