Cubs & O's fill needs
« on: April 30, 2010, 11:35:49 AM »
The Cubs needed to round out their roster, and I needed some pitching, so it looks like we are perfect trade partners here.

Cubs send to :BAL:
CI Jones, Chipper, $13.5m (2012) + $8m in 2011, $4.5m in 2012
SP Romero, Ricky, $0.5m (P-2012)
RP Gray, Jeff, $0.5m (P-n/a)
RP Angel Guzman $2 (2012)
6-20 CHC (from COL)

:BAL: send to Cubs
OF Montanez, Luis, $0.5m (P-2012)
MI Izturis, Cesar, $2.5m (2010)
CI Encarnacion, Edwin, $4m (2010)
P Albers, Matt, $0.5m (P-2010)
3-8 BAL (from PIT from LAA from CHC)
3-20 BAL (from COL)

Mike, great dealin' with ya.  I take on a headache of a contract in Chipper, but we designed this trade, so that I dropped him after the deadline this year then I would not owe money in 2011 or 2012.  I may end up trading Chipper again to a competitor, so this can all work out.  Cubs needed some MLB support just to field a roster.  I give up two top draft picks and a potentially good reliever in Albers to basially get Ricky Romero.

I accept.. this widdles my contract woes down to Buerhle who is signed only through 2011.  I thought my Cubs could compete a while back, but I am a Cubs fan and I should know better.  I have worked hard to trade away big contracts for smaller ones while acquiring young talent and draft picks.  It is tough to see Romero go, but it is a responsibility of mine to field a proper MLB lineup. plus I am not sure if Romero can last a full season.  He reminds me of the Pirates Jeff Karstens (a bit better though)... perhaps not a starter as the innings get to him.

 :iatp:

Romero is the best player in the trade, if his 2nd half numbers are improved on last year.  The Chipper coverage was smart.  Encarnacion could still pan out, I guess.

just 1 question....If your paying for Chipper's buyout, why are you doing this trade? I think you did this trade just to get him off of your roster....

I am essentially covering the fees for the buyout post-2010.  This frees me of his contract, fills out my MLB roster, upgrades my draft picks, and gives me some cap room.  I am going to use that cap room to go after some FA and become a cash dump for teams willing to give prospects.

There's a problem with this trade, you can't trade more money in the future than in the present from what I understand. That means that the O's can't pay for Chipper's contract in 2011 and 2012 unless they are covering at least the same amount in the present year.

Not true... it is perfectly fine to do that as long as it is covered by the contract.

Correct - I don't think we have any rules for how the cash needs to be structured, other than it cannot exceed the annual salary.

The club also placed right-hander Michael Grove on the 15-day injured list due to lat tightness. In corresponding moves, the club has recalled right-hander J.P. Feyereisen and selected the contract of right-hander Michael Petersen. To make room for Petersen on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred right-hander Joe Kelly to the 60-day injured list.
