Cubs send Wiggy back to PIT
« on: April 20, 2010, 03:57:19 PM »
:CHC: to :PIT:
CI Wigginton, Ty, $3m (2010)
RP Thornton, Matt, $1m (2011)
P Robertson, David, $0.5m (P-2012)

:PIT: to :CHC:
C-CI Walker, Neil, $0.5m (P-n/a)
RP Casilla, Santiago, $0.5m (P-2010)
RP Gray, Jeff, $0.5m (P-n/a)
6-4 PIT
7-4 PIT

Colby came to me with this deal last week, and we were finally able to come to an agreement on pick compensation.  My team is not competing this year, and he needed a flexible position player such as Wigginton and wanted to improve the bullpen.  In return, I pick up a few prospects (Walker being the most intriguing) and decent mid-round picks.

I accept.

I really wasn't interested in trading more picks, but bringing Wiggington back to Pittsburgh for the 3rdd time (1st was in reality, 2nd was in off-season) became a solution to my depth problems.  I have more depth than actual players with Raburn, Kennedy, and Wigginton all being flex-guys.  Improving my bullpen wasn't at the top of my agenda, but it was a way to balance the picks and help me compete a bit more.

Just voicing my opinion as the commish, but this is a horrible trade . A good player, plus two very good RPs under contract for a guy (Walker) who is no longer considered a prospect, Casilla - formerly Jairo Garcia - not even in the majors, and Gray - a 28 year old nobody. Both relievers that the Cubs are giving up are better than what you are getting back. The Pirates are giving up nothing of value, and getting quite a bit in return. This is a severely lopsided trade. I am not on the TC, so it is not up to me, but I just wanted my voice to be heard.

I viewed this trade this afternoon and thought the same thing.  I chose to think about it before approving or denying.

Gray is not worth either of the other relievers.  Wigginton's contract is reasonable.  Casilla is not close to returning to the majors.  Walker will be playing in my softball league next year.  Mid level draft picks.  I can not see a single reason the Cubs would make this trade.

Too lopsided for me to approve.

I dont see how you guys can not approve this trade, i understand that it is lopsided, but my thinking with trades is as long as there is no sign of collusion and both sides have a reason, it should be approved. This isnt crazy enough to be overturned I dont think.

Cubbies, please give me more of a statement as to how this improves your team.  I understand the Wigginton part and possibly Thornton, but can't get why Robertson was thrown in.  I understand not competing this year, but this trades makes me think that you will not be trying to compete for several years.

Please let me know why made this trade and I will consider approval.  Please include the intriguing part of Walker.

I would be more than willing to remodel the deal.  I have my bias toward Neil Walker as a top prospect due to his early minors hype, him being a Pirate, from Pittsburgh, and of nearly the same age as myself.

New offer on the table
:CHC: to :PIT:
CI Wigginton, Ty, $3m (2010)
RP Thornton, Matt, $1m (2011)

:PIT: to :CHC:
C-CI Walker, Neil, $0.5m (P-n/a)
RP Gray, Jeff, $0.5m (P-n/a)
6-4 PIT
7-4 PIT

Essentially, the Cubs get younger at CI, and then receive a replacement reliever plus solid mid-round picks for Thornton.

This is an improvement and I would approve.

Cubbies agree?
