Angels, Cubs, Yankees complete three-team deal
« on: March 25, 2010, 04:30:53 PM »
I had this trade discussion going on for quite some time with Chicago.  I wanted to get rid of Jeter's contract and receive a decent return and maybe shed even more cap space, so that I can be flexible enough for another title run.  This morning, the Cubs GM mentioned PMed me saying that the Angels are interested in freeing cap space and cutting a couple veteran contracts they didn't like.  The proposal came back to me as open, I accepted, and here we are with a fantastic three team deal...

Yankees send to Angels
CI Wigginton, Ty, $3m (2010)
MI Jeter, Derek, $19m (2010)
MI Weeks, Jemile, $0.5m (P-n/a)
P Hughes, Phil, $0.5m (P-2010)
P Pettitte, Andy, $8m (2010)
P Marte, Damaso, $4m (2011)
P Chamberlain, Joba, $0.5m (P-2011)

Yankees send to Cubs
P Outman, Josh, $0.5m (P-2012)
CI Overbay, Lyle, $6m (2010)

Angels send to Cubs
SP Buehrle, Mark, $14m (2011)
CI Jones, Chipper, $13.5m (2012)
CI Vitters, Josh, $0.5m (P-n/a)

Cubs send to Yankees
CI Sanchez, Gaby, $0.5m (P-n/a)
MI Miles, Aaron, $2.5m (2010)
P Marshall, Sean, $3.5m (2010)
P Carrasco, Carlos, $0.5m (P-n/a)

Angels send to Yankees
SP Lackey, John, $10.5m (2012)
SP Vazquez, Javier, $11.5m (2010)

I think I have this right...  It was originally a Yankees-Cubs deal involving Jeter, but the Cubs weren't all too excited about him.  The players I wanted to get rid of, the Angels then wanted, and the Cubs picked up the veterans from the Angels that they liked.  I lose young guns Chamberlain, Hughes, Weeks, and Outman, but I gain Sanchez and Carrasco and of course I receive Lackey and Vazquez.  The Cubs appear to gain a lot being the intermediary between two big market franchises that need cap room.

I would be accepting this deal, but my financials aren't in track.  I didn't take into account for the Avila signing.... will rework the deal.

I accept the new deal as it doesn't change anything that I am sending or receiving.  It's amazing how sensitive a deal like this becomes with all of the big salaries shuffling around.  The extra cap space ($13m) is needed, Jeter wasn't staying for next year, and Lackey makes my rotation even better.

I gladly accept this deal.   :iatp: I have been spending half of the day reading over rules and sending trade proposals.  Of course, since I already know Mike, these discussions went much quicker over email.  IMO, the big thing I lose here is Lackey.  I gain flexibility and more cap room (which I will need for next year too).  I am a big Yankee fan, so I love it that I get Jeter, Chamberlain, and Hughes among a few others.  I also have the room on my roster to gain all of these players and not worry about drops.  Now, I'll just have to figure out what I'll do with those FA claims I have going on!

Wow indeed!

This would be our first three-team deal.  I know Dan once came to me with a trade proposal that involved the D'Backs, but that one never developed.

Jake, it looks like that Angels starting rotation you developed is being wiped out in one move!

The Yankees released Damaso Marte yesterday, therefore he cannot be part of this deal

Since I am now getting Overbay, I am fine with the deal not including Marte.  Dan and Colby, if that is fine with you, we can just get an agreement from the Yankees (since that part of the deal does not involve the Cubs) to have this trade process?

I forgot I dropped a couple players.  :rool:  I too have been lurking around here today to see the thoughts on this deal.  I approve of the trade without Marte in it.
