2012 and 2013 Salary Caps
« on: October 14, 2011, 10:57:09 AM »
I would have thought that the 2012 and 2013 salary caps would have changed more for several teams in the league.  For example, the Athletics have clearly out-performed their caps, but their caps in 2012 and 2013 doesn't seem to have reflected it.  On the flip-side, the several large market teams that performed well under their caps saw minimal decreases to it?  I thought that the actual standings represented 20% of our future caps, so it seemed puzzling to me.

I disagree on big markets. Look at how bostons has dropped. The mets fell another 10m. I took the yanks to the world series and the cap fell 10m.

I don't mean to single out any one team, but I have to identify a team to make my point, so here goes.  How did the Cubs' cap go from 142.5 in 2011 to 148 in 2012?

It is a bit of a moving average relying on numbers from prior years.  Chicago started with $200m cap in 2009.  Reference this post for the 2009-2010 cap changes - http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=323.0

That $200m cap is still included in their averages, but then after this year the Cubs' cap starts dropping due to recent caps and poor performance as it falls to $139.5m next year, and if the Cubs perform like they did in 2011, then it will fall even more in 2012 to $125m.

Colby, do you still have the link to how the cap is calculated?

The message on the team pages say that the 2012 and 2013 salary caps are set in stone and it shows the Cubs with a cap of 148m for 2012 and 2013.

I was also curious about this as my team has performed very well and I took a 20 million cap loss for next year.

I said this wrong...
