I don't mean to single out any one team, but I have to identify a team to make my point, so here goes. How did the Cubs' cap go from 142.5 in 2011 to 148 in 2012?
It is a bit of a moving average relying on numbers from prior years. Chicago started with $200m cap in 2009. Reference this post for the 2009-2010 cap changes - http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=323.0That $200m cap is still included in their averages, but then after this year the Cubs' cap starts dropping due to recent caps and poor performance as it falls to $139.5m next year, and if the Cubs perform like they did in 2011, then it will fall even more in 2012 to $125m.
