I like it giving guys a hometown discount, and allows teams to keep high-end guys they either grew or traded for on more team friendly deals.

As for the franchise tags, I am not a big fan of that because they can be a cap killer, with large $$ values. I would rather see something like comp picks than franchise tag. Like if I am the Wolves and I let Butler walk and the Suns sign him, get a comp back at the end of round one. Only do it for like top-10 players leaving teams or something, with the top-5 bringing back a 1st and the bottom 5 a second. I personally would prolly not use the tag if it follows the NFL guidelines of median of top-10 salaries per position or 110% of last years # which ever is greater.

Franchise tag is the average of the top-5 per position. So if you have a PG, you're pretty well screwed, with Curry, Westbrook, Paul, Wall all making a crazy high number. Not sure who the 5th would be (James Harden if we're counting him as a PG/SG, but quick glance someone like Lillard, McCollum, Holiday, Lowry).

Not sure I'm franchise tagging a middle of the pack player for $32-35m a year. I think most people will hit FA and not many people will use their franchise tag, other than if that actually have one of the top-5 players in their position.

Or maybe the rule needs to be amended slightly somehow...

How is the draft going to shape up? Is it how it went down in the NBA or are we doing a draw?

Just posted the draft list: http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=334792.0

It's just wherever your team picked in the real NBA, minus the 10 teams that aren't in this league.

Your Bulls are in the 5 slot. (You should swap with me since I let you have your hometown team :))

2 quick things I'm considering and may make official when I send the next PM but I'll post here to get some feedback first.

1. Allowing for 2 Franchise Tags (but you have to use them on a different position). I think if a team can afford it and wants to keep 2 players at the franchise price it should be allowed

2. This is a rule from the Gridiron Franchise NFL and I think it is even better suited for us with the fact we don't have traditional resigning:

Awarding a 10% discount on any Free agents won who were previously on the same team last season. Example I traded for Barnes on his expiring deal this year and don't think he is worth keeping with the franchise tag but I want to go after him again in FA next year- if I win him at, for example 15m per a year, I would then get him at 13.5m

Thoughts?

I like option 2.

10% discount rule is in effect and after seeing the DEN/ATL there is a ruling on trading picks where you can only deal current year and 1 future year- so until the start of the season only 2018 and 2019 deals will be traded.

I'll also mention this in the next PM for anyone who may miss it here

The NBA is garbage for a lot of reasons, but the trading of future picks is one of them.  I'm glad this is nipped early on as I would hate to be the guy who takes over a team in a couple years only to find out that they have no picks and no players to show from it.  2 years out may be too far, current year +1, would be better, IMO.

Exactly my sentiments, and thoughts.

But with the current trade the decision was made already. Could’ve easily have just made the 2 teams trade their 2019 2nd rounders though

I see valid reasoning as to not allowing it but I also think given that the rules require potential pick compensation for RFA's and then also trading for any guys that get Franchise Tagged I figured allowing everyone 6 picks to work with in a given season is fair- though my initial thought was to allow 2 future years but cap it at max being allowed to move 4 out 6 available picks each year. So if someone moves both 2020s and both 2018s they must keep both 2019s or any other combination.  However, I figured to keep it simple and not put a restriction but if there is more support for this I am fine with it either way.

I see the reasoning, but as someone who has had to take over neglected teams that need rebuilding numerous times on this site, I tend to lean more towards not allowing GMs to totally ruin a team.  If X player who they trade their future picks for ends up getting injured or in a situation where they don't produce to warrant pick compensation when they are lost during FA, they the team has no players, no pick compensation and no picks.

 :iatp:

I am fine with unleashing the 2020 picks, once our 2018-19 season starts.

Summer is when a lot of trades happen, so allowing 2020 picks to be up for trade right now, I think dilutes their value a ton, since it's so far away from the 2020 draft.

I also mentioned this to Vik: (Assuming we had RFA bidding this summer - we do not. Just an example. But we will next year)

For RFA, we would only have 2018 and 2019 picks available for compensation.

So if a team goes trigger happy and trades their 4 picks, they would be locked out of RFA bidding - I like this because there's some strategy behind trading picks, an extra thing to think about. Some teams just throw them around like candy and don't think twice.

Also, being able to receive either 2018 or 2019 picks makes it more appealing to the owner of that RFA (The owner of the RFA should have the choice of which pick they wanted to take, 2018 or 2019).
If all a team has is a 2020 pick, that's a loooong ways away and isn't really that appealing for a team to take as compensation.

If a team has say, the 8th overall pick but bids on an RFA for $18m per year, then the team owning the RFA has a choice between either matching the bid, or taking the 8th overall pick. A little more appealing than a 2020 pick which is 2 years away from knowing anything about it.

And also who knows where we'll in in 2 years from now, half of us might not be in the league. At least if you get a choice between 2018 or 2019 picks, you have the choice  between knowing what position the 2018 pick is (draft list available), or having a general idea of how the team bidding on your RFA will do in the standings next year, based on their roster.

(Again... This is just an example as if we had RFA this summer. We DO have RFA next summer in 2019, so the choice would then be between the 2019 picks or 2020 picks)
