The Angels will extend Josh Hamilton.Current ContractOF Hamilton, Josh, $18m (2015)Ranks:2014 #84 OF2015 #158 OFExtension Value:OF-84 $2m (Tabata, Jose)Contract Rule:$1.5m - $5m, 3 yearsNew Contract:OF Hamilton, Josh, $2m (2018)
I won't extend him. Also, I suggest this rule gets looked at. IMO, a 34 y/o player who can't stay healthy doesn't deserved a 70% extension on a contract that was put in place during his prime.
I believe the factors you are citing will come into play during free agency and I would think that he would be signed to a more "cap friendly" contract during the off-season.
Agreed. Between extensions and free agency we have the means to handle these situations. Case in point is M. Cabrerra's extension. He, at 33 y/o at the start of next season, is still scoring 30+ppg and has earned an extension. Hamilton will go into free agency and earn what the market will bear.
You just validated my argument. Cabrera is earning his extension while Hamilton is not. If it was a true extension on market value the he would be at $2M/yr, but the 70% rule is keeping his value artificially inflated due to a contract from when he was 27 y/o and in his prime. They are two different situations, but are being lumped into one.
Line 8,Item VI B-2.0 Rules Committee Protocol in the proposed rules change (if it passes) provides a way to bring a referendum before the body for discussion/vote. Unfortunately, a change can't be made for this season but you can bid on Hamilton during free agency should you decide not to resign him before 9/30/15. I'm afraid it's the only recourse we have at the time.
Cool, thanks. I'll bring it up for the rule committee. I know it won't change now, but Hamilton won't be the only guy who isn't earning his 70% in the twilight of his career so maybe it can help teams in the future.
Personally, and I'm pretty sure I can speak for Ernie, I would welcome such participation. We'll see what we can do.As for Hamilton, a point of reference for me would be Carl Crawford. Not quite the same caliber as Hamilton but I was able to acquire him this past off season for $3.5M/3 yrs.
