AL West Rivals Make Trade
« on: April 10, 2011, 10:40:06 PM »
CI Tatis, Fernando, $2m (2011)
OF Taylor, Michael, $0.5m (P-n/a)

for
CI Martinez, Francisco, $0.5m (2012)
P Tejeda, Robinson, $2m (2012)

The A's acquire Taylor who is coming off a bad year in PCL and AFL.  I believe that he has the power and ability to be a major league starter, hopefully he figures it out.  Tatis is a salary trade.  He is another high level OF spec for me.

I like Tejada, but prefer prospect contract RP.  Trading him will free up 1.5 m in 2012 and for my budget that helps.  Martinez is a good spec CI as well.

Dave, thanks for the deal, please confirm when you can.

I needed a decent RP and i get it with Tejada, giving up Taylor is hard but i needed the RP as a start.Tatis is dead wood and Martinez is a pretty decent Spect.

I accept this trade.

This trade is probably going through which I have no problem with, but some free advice for the new GM:

I would not make this trade at all.

Let's look at what you get in return:
Franciso Martinez - a 3B that's at least 3 or 4 years away if everything pans out. There are many like him that can signed for free on the free agent market
Robinson Tejada - a 29 y/o reliever with 0 upside, but most importantly, eat up 2M of cap space for next year, something that you have very little of. A lot of similar (if not better) RPs were signed to the league minimum during the offseason (Motte, Affedlt, etc)

Let's take a look what you give up:
Fernando Tatis - Salary dump, this is good, but you get the 2M back in the offsesaon anyway.
Michael Taylor - looking more and more like a bust, but there is still a slight possibility he might burst through.

So let's review, with this deal, you trade away the little upside of Michael Taylor and will be taking on 2M in salary cap space for next year to get a serviceable but overpaid RP. There is no upside in this deal for you at all, and you blew 2M which could be spent on prospects (e.g., Carlos Perez/Enny Romero were all signed for roughly the same amount this offseason).

Now, this is a pretty small deal so you haven't really done any substantial damage to the team. I'd let it go, but I also want to give you some insight on the intricacies of the league.

I think Taylor is done and done, so any upgrade is a solid move

:iatp: Cheng sums it up in a way that I completely agree with.  I approve but only because I don't want to judge prospective value.
