Suggested Rule for Eliminating Savings on Released Players
« on: October 11, 2010, 04:41:49 PM »
Do we want to consider the elimination of salary savings by releasing players?  MLB contracts are guaranteed, so this appears to be an unrealistic rule.  I waited until the 2010 books were closed to suggest it, so we could start fresh with the new 2011 FA contracts including minimum years.  The current rule allows teams to get out from under as much as 75% of the annual salary in the season following the current one if you cut the player after the trade deadline.  I'm quite certain that there was a good reason for this rule in the beginning, but I thought I'd throw it out for consideration, because I know that many of us want this league to be as realistic as possible.  This rule seems to be a pretty big difference between our league and real life.

I think changing the rule might be a bad idea. Take the Mets for example. Todd (green) inherited a team that was poor shape. He couldnt control that. If he was unable to creat cap room and capatalize on getting Bryce Harper than that would have been terrible for his team. He cant control the bad signings or moves that the previous gm made. Plus having the rule the way it is now, helps us get some free agent action and makes the offseason more interesting. I will not drop AJ Burnett. Idc if three years from now im barely paying him, I will not pay 12 mil and 8mil to player so that i can release them. I like the rule the way it is.

Roy, all of rule suggestions make it seem like you have some good ideas for a new league that could take Franchise GM a step further to reality.  I like this league the way it is.  Have you thought of being a commissioner?

The new league called Major League Dynasty Baseball will have every single major rule in effect. Including Rule 5 and everything. Think about that Roy

I know he hasnt but trust me he is working very hard on the player pools. Including every minor leaguer in all farm systems. Im helping with the league set up and every rule is identical to the mlb.

I totally agree with this. If you sign a player to a contract, you should pay the full amount of the contract. This rule is made for large market teams: they can outbid a small market team and if the player flops, they have enough salary room to take the cap hit.

Thats the value of winning seasons, your cap goes up.  got to have releases without full penalty because of new owners of bad teams

Agreed... this is a rule that can't be changed in this league.  We have a very good thing going.
