You have 3 years of prospect eligibility...the sooner you extend someone the bigger the discount. It starts at p-n/a, then add one year subtract 10 percent from the discount, etc...

When the player is in the final year of his prospect eligibility is when you receive the lowest discount.

At long last the Padres would like to extend Mat Latos using the prospect extension clause.  I believe this would begin next season.  The math looks like this:

Mat Latos was 25th best in 2011 and 28th overall in 2010 (amongst SP).  25th best SP is due 11m.  With the Prospect Extension
2013 - 4.4 = 5m
2014 - 5.5 = 6m
2015 - 6.6 = 7m
2016 - 7.7 = 8m
2017 - 7.7 = 8m

What a deal for a 2 on most teams and still has potential!

25th Best SP = 11m per season.  11m x 60% = 6.6m (7m rounded up). 

So Latos receives a 5 year 7m dollar extension.
