FGM 2010 Playoffs, Regular Season Review
«
on:
September 13, 2010, 10:27:23 AM »
I will start accepting GM of the year votes publicly in this thread. There are some good candidates out there such as the GMs of the Astros, Cardinals, White Sox, Athletics, Tigers, Blue Jays, Brewers, Phillies, Dodgers, and Yankees.
The Astros win the tiebreaker over the Cardinals because they beat them in their one and only matchup. We didn't have anything in the rules for tiebreakers to get into the playoffs. We only have tiebreakers for the playoffs (which may never be used considering the low likelihood of such an event). I like our H2H system... the schedule can only be improved if it is customized. I offered a customized schedule prior to the season that was rejected (which is fine), but perhaps this is something that we need to consider again.
Anyways, congrats to Jeff
and Kent
for wrapping up those last playoff spots. The first week of ALDS/NLDS action is as follows.
(18-5) vs.
(14-9)
(18-5) vs.
(17-6)
*Yankees had #1 seed over Athletics because of more points (no H2H matchup)
(21-2) vs.
(17-6)
(18-5) vs.
(13-10)
*Brewers do not play Astros in opening round because they are a division opponent
The Brewers-Phillies is an excellent match that we have been aware of for about a month now. Likewise, the Athletics-Blue Jays tilt is another match that may feature a World Series winner.
Best of luck lady and gentlemen!
Now, regarding the GM movements that we expect to happen in the coming weeks. I am not permitting Jeff to move to the Red Sox or Steph to resign until their teams' seasons are finished. Our draft starts in a couple days which means some future GMs may miss their team's 1st round pick. If a GM position is in limbo, then they can tell me who they want to pick. If a GM is moving then the new GM can surely advise the lame duck GM of whom they want in the draft.

Here is my extrapolated W-L record for all of the teams. The wins and losses are not going to be perfect but the order of the teams is perfect. The order of the final eight picks in the draft order are determined by the playoffs. The remaining 22 teams will use this list to determine draft order in 2011. FYI, the Brewers had an amazing season. Honestly, I feel they were a 110 win team. They were the only team to score more than 30,000 points this season, and they pushed that feat by an extra 5,000 points. The Orioles and Padres were pretty bad... and they took some extra losses to make up for the quality of teams with winning records this year. I made sure all of the wins and losses averaged out to 81-81. Enjoy...

I'll give my vote to Kent for his job with the Astros. It's always fun to see an underdog beat out a favorite for a playoff spot. Way to turn a losing team around.

My vote for GM of the Year is pending but I have taken it down to three people.
Kent
, Rob
, and Daniel
The Astros and Blue Jays had a $100m cap whereas Rob had a $70m cap in 2010. All three of these teams were at or slightly below 0.500 in 2009.

I will make a vote, even tho i did miss half the year, and didnt see the moves that everyone made to turn there team around. The stros (no offense kent) are prolly the worst team in the playoffs. But he is in one of the deepest divisions in the league, so immediately my hat goes out for him. My vote however is the A's (time for a miller). I vote for him because of the payroll being lower, and I have seen and heard of some the moves he made to acquire the team he has. Im just completely baffled how the formger yankee gm gave up robinson cano (even b4 this year, you had to see the ability he had) The A's are 18-5 and when you look at the team they put together, you dont say, wow that team is stacked....(aka brewers). Great job Rob.
So my vote is
The Oakland Athletics and GM Rob Miller

2010 Moneyball Award
This goes out to the GM of the team whose ranking in the league was furthest away from their cap ranking (in descending order). It has officially been clinched by Robert Miller of the Oakland Athletics. His team will finish no worse than 8th for a minimum difference of 17. The runner-ups were as follows...
Ben Yergey, Milwaukee Brewers
(no matter how he finishes he will 2nd - difference as high as 15, low as 8)
Omar Molina, Arizona Diamondbacks
- team had a decent run in the 2nd half, difference of 8
Roy Cankosyan, Texas Rangers
- difference of 7
Colby Schaeffer, Pittsburgh Pirates
- difference of 6
Michael Bailey, Tampa Bay Rays
- difference of 6
Daniel Valensi, Toronto Blue Jays
- difference of 6

Most Improved
Jeff Wren clinched this award... the Tigers were 28th in the league in 2009 and his team will finish no worse than 8th. Runner ups were Daniel's Blue Jays who are improving from 18th to the playoffs, Rick's White Sox who went from 25th to 13th, and Kent's Astros who went from 20th to the playoffs.

My vote goes to Ben with a slight edge over Robert. Both made the trades they needed after acquiring some top prospects. Ben has a great team and it will be interesting to see how much of it he is able to keep together next season.
